"Conversion is the optimal solution, if possible. But the Muslim authorities and perhaps the great majority of Muslim people will resist it by killing the converts."

so let me get this straight. isolation isn't working so conversion is the only solution. and if that doesn't work? kill them? you sound just like them. with respect to you, its no solution to turn into your enemy.

FWIW, i defended an afghan on murder charges in kabul and the judge offered to let the guy go on the spot if i would just take his family's passports and get them canadian citizenship. the whole judicial system is corrupt there. and my client was innocent, 2 taliban had killed the man and framed him by stealing his car, we had a number of witnesses. when the court refused to hear from any of them and i refused to take the passports, he was convicted right there with no evidence. welcome to the new democratic and free afghanistan folks, this is what we fought for.

Actually, we fought to turn Afghanistan into the anti-Taliban. Our intent is for it to be a backstop against muslim radicalism. Democracy is a good first step, and we've done impressive work on that score. But obviously, democracy without freedom of conscience is merely a license for the majority to murder the minority.

So if we enforce democracy without going the extra step, we've accomplished nothing. Protecting this man is not a contradiction of our policy, our policy is meaningless if we don't protect him.

If we don't get it, our enemies do. They all know that Bush is a "Christian" president. If he, and we, stand by while they kill Christians for being Christians, this will mean that the Taliban have reclaimed the government with the help of Christian mercenaries.

I was looking at the larger picture, not the justice system in Afghanistan.

Every since Muhammed, Islam has been an expansionist, violent religion with an ambition to conquer the entire world. That went into abeyance for a while, but now it's back, and they have regained some of the means to accomplish their goal.

Unless you think it would be better just to knuckle under and let them enslave us, or treat us and our families with the kind of injustice you have seen in Afghanistan, then there are a limited number of options.

As I said, isolating them and building a fence around them is probably no longer practical. Killing a billion of them is not an option for most people, although it could happen if they start nuking our cities or killing millions of us first.

The third, and best, alternative is conversion, and that seems a bit more promising after hearing that 10,000 Afghans have converted out of disillusionment with their religion, even though they risk the death penalty for doing so. We are already trying Democracy as a kind of conversion tool, but that may not do the job. Christianity may be a more hopeful alternative, although it certainly won't be easy.

Conversion is not politically correct to talk about these days. But what are the alternatives?
