Afghans to free Christian convert (may be sent to mental hospital!)
Chicago Tribune ^ | 3/26/2006 | Kim Barker

Once doctors decide if Rahman is mentally fit to stand trial, prosecutors will decide whether to refile charges against him. If he's sick, he'll be treated, officials said. After he's treated, prosecutors will again ask Rahman whether he's Christian.

"If he has the same answer, we'll see what happens," said Aloko, the deputy attorney general.

If recharged, Rahman would face the death penalty. If not, he could be sent to live in a mental hospital here.

You think we should go the Ezra Pound route and put Jim McDermott, Michael Moore, etc. in mental institutions after the war? -- assuming we live to see the end of the war..

After the Korean War and the talk about brain washing, I remember comments and media mention of insane asylums being used during WWII as a way to maintain security.

No brain washing was involved, just detention.

(Netscape just cut out on me, so back on IE)

I remember reading about North Korean brainwashing many years ago...

What impressed me the most was their finding that if you separate the leaders from a group of POW's that the ones left will pretty much do or believe anything they are told.

They would watch a group and then take out of the group anyone who showed any initiative, like suggesting making latrines or picking up the garbage, etc.

The part that rocked me was that only 1-2% of the men needed to be removed, that only that few showed any initiative or leadership.

That made me a lot more understanding of Patty Hearst when that situation arose.

Back to the mental institutions...

I wonder (assuming this happened) if FDR got the idea from Stalin.

Meanwhile, my husband has been watching a documentary about FDR and Stalin in WWII and what impressed him most was how old and decrepit FDR was. Not just at the end, but before. Wonders how much grief we endured with the Soviets after the war was due to FDR not being physically or mentally strong enough to stand up to Stalin during the war.

I'm so glad Condi is cleaning up the State Dept and that George is in the Oval, especially with all this news about the Russians helping Saddam. Wouldn't it have been lovely if Gore or Kerry had been in the Oval and Uncle Joe Biden at State?

Our country is riddled with people who are still spiritually aligned with Russia instead of their own Constitution, despite the implosion of the Soviet Union. And I suspect a fair number of them still take their marching orders from that part of the world.

They're still married to the idea of socialist workers of the world united, or are still taking money from the communist till. Yet most of them would never in a million years happily become a lockstep worker in the factories or fields.

So what is the mental defect they suffer from? Maybe they do belong in insane asylums.

I thought this new Afghan government was supposed to be better than the @sshole Taliban.

Looks like we got nothing for many non Muslims death freeing those dick he@ds from their slave masters.

I don't accept their compromise.

Concur with being appalled.

However, the current Afghani government isn't harboring bin Laden. And if the Taliban had given up bin Laden in 2001 and destroyed his al Quaeda camps, the U.S. would have tolerated their continued hold on power there.

The difference is that now we can roam around and shoot terrorists that want to kill Americans. Still can't roam around and shoot Afghanis who want to kill Christian converts.

Then a Texas-style "fatwa," delivered courtesy of US special ops, should be visited upon the Islamofascists who call a fatwa upon him.

If they do "fatwa", then perhaps we should do "thinwa"...

FDR was certainly old and decrepit. However, the reason he didn't stand up to Stalin is that he believed that the Soviet system was good. His complicity with the USSR is covered in "Roosevelt and Stalin, the Failed Courtship". A wonderful little book by Robert Nisbet, which should be mandatory reading in high school history classes.

It's amazing how many people have bought into the conceit that communism failed in Russia because it wasn't run by the right leaders.

How can you counter such stupidity about the nature of human beings?
