I think you're absolutely right. While I agree on the importance of the issues outlined, those things are moot if we're bankrupt and overrun by an invading army. A third party candidate could make a major strike in '08.

I don't think there will be a backlash until true conservatives run as Republicans.
There is no possibility of a third party candidate and conservatives just can't stay home on election day.

And if it does, that will only send the GOP back into the wilderness for the next generation or more; if there is even an American after that.

What everyone needs VERY much to realize, is that this country is not now and probably never was, as conservative as those screaming the most, on FR are. Yes, yes, I know all about the "principles" talk, the watering of the tree of liberty, yada, yada, yada...but, when push comes to shove, getting some of what we want, is far better than not only getting NOTHING, but worse than that.
