Christian Convert Released From Prison

By AMIR SHAH, Associated Press Writers

An Afghan man who had faced the death penalty for converting from Islam to Christianity has been released from prison after the case was dropped, the justice minister said Tuesday.

The announcement came after the United Nations said Abdul Rahman has appealed for asylum outside Afghanistan and that the world body was working to find a country willing to take him.

Justice Minister Mohammed Sarwar Danish told The Associated Press that the 41-year-old was released from the high-security Policharki prison on the outskirts of Kabul late Monday.

"We released him last night because the prosecutors told us to," he said. "His family was there when he was freed, but I don't know where he was taken."

Deputy Attorney General Mohammed Eshak Aloko told the AP that prosecutors had issued a letter calling for Rahman's release because "he was mentally unfit to stand trial." He also said he did not know where Rahman was staying but that he may be sent overseas for medical treatment.

Hours earlier, hundreds of clerics, students and others chanting "Death to Christians!" marched through the northern Afghan Mazar-i-Sharif to protest the court's decision Sunday to dismiss the case.

"Abdul Rahman must be killed. Islam demands it," said senior Cleric Faiez Mohammed, from the nearby northern city of Kunduz. "The Christian foreigners occupying Afghanistan are attacking our religion."

Several Muslim clerics have threatened to incite Afghans to kill Rahman if he is freed, saying that he is clearly guilty of apostasy and deserves to die.

Rahman was arrested last month after police discovered him with a Bible. He was put on trial last week for converting 16 years ago while he was a medical aid worker for an international Christian group helping Afghan refugees in Pakistan. He had faced the death penalty under Afghanistan's Islamic laws.

The case set off an outcry in the United States and other nations that helped oust the hard-line Taliban regime in late 2001 and provide aid and military support for Afghan President Hamid Karzai. President Bush and others insisted Afghanistan protect personal beliefs.

U.N. spokesman Adrian Edwards said Rahman has asked for asylum "outside Afghanistan."

"We expect this will be provided by one of the countries interested in a peaceful solution to this case," he said.

No country has yet offered asylum to Rahman, said an official familiar with the case who declined to be named because of its sensitivity.

Asked whether the U.S. government was doing anything to secure Rahman's safety after he is released, State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said in Washington that where he goes after he is freed "is going to be up to Mr. Rahman."

He urged Afghans not to resort to violence even if they are unhappy with the resolution of the case.

The international outrage over Rahman's case put Karzai in a difficult position because he also risked offending religious sensibilities in Afghanistan, where senior Muslim clerics have been united in calling for Raham to be executed.

Stuck inside these four walls, sent inside forever,
Never seeing no one nice again like you,
Mama you, mama you.
If I ever get out of here,
Thought of giving it all away
To a registered charity.
All I need is the Gospel each day
If I ever get out of here.

Well, the scimitar slashed with a mighty crash as we fell into the sun,
And the first one said to the second one there "I hope you’re having fun."
Man on the run, man on the run!
And the Muslim man and Cleric Sam were searching every one...

For the man on the run, man on the run, man on the run, man on the run!!!

Well, the undertaker drew a heavy sigh seeing no one else had come,
And a bell was ringing in the village mosque for the Christian on the run.
Man on the run, man on the run!
And the Muslim man and Cleric Sam, were searching every one...

For the man on the run, man on the run, man on the run, man on the run!!!

Well, the night was falling as the Arab world refused to settle down.
In the town they’re searching for him every where, but he never will be found.
Man on the run, Man on the run!

And the Sharia judge, who held a grudge
Will search for evermore...
For the man on the run, man on the run, man on the run, man on the run!!!

Bush gave "religion of peace" a chance to be proved true, but it proved false.

Better to have Afghanistan under the Taliban, festering with terrorists and blowing up innocent Americans than releasing a Christian from prison?

Logic isn't your strong suit, is it?

Where the heck was BUSH on this ?!!

Ummmmmmmm.........where have YOU been?

President Bush is most likely the reason that this man was released.

You really need to pay more attention.

Now, if we could only smack some sense into Bush's head and get on with the task.

I'm sure if the President of the United States could be convinced to wage war on nearly a billion people, he would've been done so by now.

FR has to be the only place where the members complain for days about the absence of a desired outcome, only to complain further when that desired outcome occurs.

"Abdul Rahman must be killed. Islam demands it,"

God works in mysterious ways!

This ONE case has opened up a lot of eyes. There are many Christians who, for the FIRST time, are realizing the threat islam is to Christianity. For that I am very thankful!

Christians all over the world have been praying for Abdul Rahman and for his life to be spared. It appears to me our prayers have been answered. How about we praise God rather than finding the negative in this wonderful outcome?

Yes, his life is still in danger, and it will be for the rest of his life. But maybe the outcome will give other secret "Christians" the courage to admit their beliefs. For islam to be defeated it MUST start with BRAVE Muslims who are willing to risk their lives for Freedom of religion.

It is so easy for us to criticize them, when we aren't risking our lives to own a Bible, let alone be a Christian. We should continue to pray that God will create circumstances for Muslims to learn the Truth and then to have the courage to act on it!

The Book of Acts gives us many examples of how Christians in prison helped spread the Gospel!

34"But a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the Law, respected by all the people, stood up in the Council and gave orders to put the men outside for a short time."
[...]
38 "So in the present case, I say to you, stay away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or action is of men, it will be overthrown;
39 but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them; or else you may even be found fighting against God."

40 "They took his advice; and after calling the apostles in, they flogged them and ordered them not to speak in the name of Jesus, and then released them.
41 So they went on their way from the presence of the Council, rejoicing that they had been considered worthy to suffer shame for His name.
42 And every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ."
Acts 5:34, Acts 5:38-42

Great I am glad that he has been released. The problem is still there, it is still a crime to convert from Islam. The problem will remain until freedom of religion is firmly established in the Afghanistan's constitution!

Winston Churchill said this about Muslims, over a hundred years ago:

"How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries.

Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity.

The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property -- either as a child, a wife, or a concubine -- must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world.

Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science -- the science against which it had vainly struggled -- the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome." -Sir Winston Churchill

What a great quote from Churchill! He wasn't afraid to tell it like it is. I for one am getting tired of "tolerance" towards those who are not tolerant:

{{Hours earlier, hundreds of clerics, students and others chanting "Death to Christians!"...}}

And what would the world's reaction be if the same thing happened in our streets, calling for death to Muslims?

>"I for one am getting tired of "tolerance" towards those who are not tolerant:"<

-Agreed...Note that most Islamo-apologists use moral equivalence (relativism) to defend Muslim behavior...

Moral equivalence:
"To claim that there can be no moral or ethical hierarchy decided between two sides in a conflict, nor in the actions or tactics of the two sides."

"I really don't understand how those deaths are so meaningless to so many people here or people refuse to recognize the valor and courage of those people."

I don't know if you noticed, but the democratically elected government of all those warm fuzzy muzzies that you're defending just tried to execute one of your Christian bretheren, and likely would have done EXACTLY that were we not currently occupying their nasty vermin-infested false-prophet-pedophile-worshipping pig-sty of a country.

Muslims don't deserve freedom or democracy. They deserve the iron jackboot of some murderous dictator on their necks forever, it fits right in with their religion.

A concise and accurate summary. They wish to re-establish the Caliph and his Caliphate.

It's their equivalent of a really bloodthirsty medieval pope. And as we all know, no one expects the Spanish Inquisition.

That the convert was released and is given a chance to find security else shows that Bush's statement of the "religion of peace" has more truth to it now that their actions show it so.

Are these children of Abraham having a conversion of hearts? Or, are they attempting to live the Covenant Promise and Mercy of Salvation that God gave to Abraham and ALL of his children?

Yes, let all Christian converts be considered to "mentally unfit to stand trial"! Let this be the precedent for all converts!!!! And following such actions of deeming converts unfit to stand the trials of Islam, let Muslims then be recognized as having a "religion of peace"!!!!!!

Why? Because this action has spoken louder than the words, "death to Christians". (Many if not all of us are guilty of a misspoken word. Would any of us want to be judged for all the death threats returned to those giving death threats? Violence begets violence, even for the spoken word.)

Afghanistan's stock just went way up. If the convert can be given safe passage to another country, Afghanistan's stock will continue to soar!
