Basically, the (Taiwanese) legislators believe the U.S. Navy will defend Taiwan, so why spend the money?

Don't count it. Any of the leading rat pols, should one become President would likely tell the Taiwanese "good luck, you're on your own".

Yeah, and the US Navy hasn't had as few ships as it has now for years and years.

Sorry... ALL of our politicians would say that, democrat or republican. GWB has already told Taiwan they're pretty much on their own. Too much investment in China to risk it on Taiwan. Sorry Taiwan, we're throwing you under the bus.
