Latinos Plan Nationwide Worker Strike

Hispanic groups in the U.S. are planning a major boycott of American life dubbed a ”day without Latinos” to protest proposed legislation that would criminalize illegal immigration.

Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) President Nativo Lopez, one of the organizers of the recent protests in Los Angeles that saw at least 500,000 people take to the streets, said the May 1 "day without Latinos” would send a stern message to Washington.

"We are looking forward to a major action in all large U.S. cities where immigrants make up a significant proportion of the workforce,” Lopez told Agence France-Presse.

"We are asking people not to go to school, or work, or shopping, and instead to go out and protest against the racist and inhumane measures in this bill.”

MAPA and other grass roots Latino groups are also organizing an April 10 protest in 20 major American cities – including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas – in a bid to defeat the proposed immigration reform bill, Lopez said.

And a third day of protest is scheduled to take place Saturday in Costa Mesa, a town in Orange County, Calif., that has been a focus of anti-illegal immigrant protests for the past several months.

The city’s mayor has pushed a proposal through the city council to train police to nab and deport illegal aliens who commit crimes.

Said Lopez: "We are going there to make a tough statement right in the bedrock of the anti-immigrant movement.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, May 1 is also known as "May Day," the International Worker's Day, which is infamously celebrated in Moscow's Red Square and by communists and socialists throughout the world.

President Reagan was great in many ways, and I love him. But even he had his faults. Even he made mistakes.

Put another way, he was human.

I thought you meant that May Day (May 1) was the second biggest holiday in Mexico.

I know Cinco de Mayo celebrates the defeat of the French forces at the Battle of Puebla, but I wasn't aware that it was *that* big of a holiday in Mexico (I thought that it was a minor holiday that was exploited by the beer and tequila industries in the U.S.).

Cinco de Mayo is the celebration of the victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla.

Everyone beats the French. What's the big deal?

I guess we'll just have to carry on and put in our own patios and flagstones and sprinkler systems.

You're welcome, M2C. I appreciate your kindness. I abhor what's going on re illegal immigration as much as anyone else here on FR, but forgetting how we got to this point is foolish. Few of us, from politicians to millions of average Americans, have clean hands when it comes to this problem.

Put another way, he was human.

That, he most certainly was. A giant of a man, but a man nonetheless. I would argue that the biggest mistake of his presidency was signing the 1986 amnesty for illegals. It set in motion what we're facing today.

"In the next 3 years we will be moving to NC."

Don't stop there, come to central PA. I've lived here 5 yrs and haven't seen anybody Mexican yet. Not even anybody black or Asian. You want to see pasty white folks doing their own most miserable jobs, they're doing them just fine here! We hardly have anyone BUT pasty white folks. :)

They are the only people the Mexicans ever beat. Kinda puts it into perspective doesn't it?

Just gives me more incentive to go out and blow a ton of money that day with friends and family who are not hispanic to prove businesses can survive with out being blackmailed into accepting illegal immigrants threats.

I hope they lose their jobs to Americans or other LEGAL immigrants who want to work.

Don't you listen to the President? These are jobs Americans refuse to do.

I was only commenting on Cinco de Mayo. Sorry to have accidentally misled you.

You're correct, of course, about the spirits industry's exploitation of 5 May, but the Mexicans (where I was, at least) celebrated loud and long.

I wonder how those same people would like it if there was a "Don't wait on a Mexican Day"?

LOL!
Someone sent me this one the other day:

Subject: Life In Southern California

A Highway Patrolman pulled a car over and told the driver that because he had been wearing his seat belt, he had just won $5,000 in the statewide safety competition.

"What are you going to do with the money?" asked the policeman.

"Well, I guess I'm going to get a driver's license," he answered.

"Oh, don't listen to him," yelled a woman in the passenger seat. "He's a smart aleck when he's drunk." This woke up the guy in the back seat who took one look at the cop and moaned," I knew we wouldn't get far in a stolen car."

At that moment, there was a knock from the trunk and a voice said, in Spanish, "Are we over the border yet?"

Don't go to Lancaster PA or Coatesville PA or Kennett Sq PA or Reading PA - lots of illegals (mostly Mexican) there.
