Latinos Plan Nationwide Worker Strike

Hispanic groups in the U.S. are planning a major boycott of American life dubbed a ”day without Latinos” to protest proposed legislation that would criminalize illegal immigration.

Mexican American Political Association (MAPA) President Nativo Lopez, one of the organizers of the recent protests in Los Angeles that saw at least 500,000 people take to the streets, said the May 1 "day without Latinos” would send a stern message to Washington.

"We are looking forward to a major action in all large U.S. cities where immigrants make up a significant proportion of the workforce,” Lopez told Agence France-Presse.

"We are asking people not to go to school, or work, or shopping, and instead to go out and protest against the racist and inhumane measures in this bill.”

MAPA and other grass roots Latino groups are also organizing an April 10 protest in 20 major American cities – including New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Dallas – in a bid to defeat the proposed immigration reform bill, Lopez said.

And a third day of protest is scheduled to take place Saturday in Costa Mesa, a town in Orange County, Calif., that has been a focus of anti-illegal immigrant protests for the past several months.

The city’s mayor has pushed a proposal through the city council to train police to nab and deport illegal aliens who commit crimes.

Said Lopez: "We are going there to make a tough statement right in the bedrock of the anti-immigrant movement.”

Perhaps not surprisingly, May 1 is also known as "May Day," the International Worker's Day, which is infamously celebrated in Moscow's Red Square and by communists and socialists throughout the world.

"In the next 3 years we will be moving to NC."

Well, we have lots and lots of Mexicans here so I'm not sure you'll be any better off.

You may want to rethink NC - there are a lot of illegals there, and they get NC drivers licenses too.

They are showing the true face of their ungratefulness to the American public and it will backfire.

"These people want to show how much we need them? "

No that is not what is going on here, if that were all it was the plan would be to just take the day off. Skip work for one day period. The fact that the plan also includes protests indecate that this is an attempt to radicalize and recuit. Azlan just what's to flex it's muscle to see how much muscle it's got, should 10 or 15 millions show up things will most likely turn violent.

I don't think the idiots realize the downfall of such a protest. Just as they don't realize how furious people are becoming at seeing the Mexican Flag waved above our own.

Assuming life goes on without them, and it will, they damage their argument that our econmy will collapse without illegal immigrants by leaving work a day. provided they actually do so.

No one is irreplaceable either. I can be replaced, and they can be replaced in their jobs. Perhaps the person who takes your place is better, perhaps worse, perhaps the same skills. But anyone can be replaced and for the less than 5% without a job in this country? I'd advise they take advantage of this walkout and apply at the businesses that are missing employees thanks to their walkout.

Anyone looking for a job? Hit the streets the day of the protests, find out where they work, and make a path to their place of "work". :-) Infact, let's have our welfare offices send all the unemployed they service directly to these businesses. That will solve a problem right there.

I was telling some other people, I havent heard as much traffic on the scanners since the LA Riots as I did on Monday during the school walkouts.

Not as violent of course, but the number of locations simulatneously quickly overwhelmed the County.

No service will get better, because the owners will have to chip in. Once my wife and I were speaking some the hungarian phrases we know to mess with the mexican working the window. She had this puzzeled look on her face. I was so funny to see a latino get a taste of their own medicine and find they didn't like it. We mostly were saying how stupid she was, because she could not follow directions.

or stand on the median strips everywhere, selling flowers in traffic? Or crying about being discriminated against because a sign isn't bilingual? Or taking over all the picnic tables in the parks with their boomboxes and spitting?

Oh heck

If all the employers became "Reagan for a day" and fired them all......

I know you're referring to the air traffic controllers, but President Reagan is directly responsible for the current out-of-control illegal immigration problem we have. He willingly signed the 1986 Immigration Reform Act -- the first true amnesty for illegals in our nation's history. More than any other single act, that opened the floodgates to illegals.

President Reagan was great in many ways, and I love him. But even he had his faults. Even he made mistakes.
