Shirley was considered a man's name until that little curly-haired girl came along.
And Ashley was a man's name at one time also. I always liked it for a man. But couldn't use it for my son because it has been co-opted to a girl's only name now.
He was born before that cute little red-haired Republican girl.......
Surely . . . you jest!
Shirely, you jest that it was previously a man's name.
P.S. D.P. stands for displaced person. Where I come from, if you called someone a D.P. it was a slur. (Names, initials, etc., can be a tricky thing :)
Ted Striker: Surely you can't be serious.
Rumack: I am serious... and don't call me Shirley.

About 30 years ago, I knew a man named "Leslie"
Morgan was a strictly male name for a while but just after my brother was born they started naming females Morgan. Sad:(
I wouldn't have called it a man's name exclusively; it was unisex before Shirley Temple came around. But it definitely became a woman's name after her.
Actually Catherine Bronte was responsible for the switch when she gave the name to one of her female characters.
Shirley was originally one of those surnmme given to the first-born son as a first name when a heiress married. (eg in Pride and Prejudice Fitzwiiliam Darcy's mother's maiden name was orginally Fitzwilliam)
So when Miss Jane Shirley married Mr John Sirius, their fisrt borm son might end up being named Shirley Sirius.
