...and we no longer have to be six feet tall.

New Coasties have to be at least six foot six. Global warming.

(For non-military members - it's an old joke...)

Ask the recruiter why the U.S. government can station hundreds of thousands of military personnel all over the world but can't keep thousands of Mexicans from crossing our southern border every day.

Lot's of great advice here. I have to echo the importance of getting a guaranteed MOS. It could be the most important decision in your daughters lifetime. It should be listed on the Enlistment contract as that is the OFFICIAL DOCUMENT which will be recognized once your daughter is in the Army and the Recruiter is out of the picture. If anything promised is not on the contract it is a worthless promise.

Having just retired from the military, and seeing my own career as well as others, there are some questions that need to be researched before deciding on an MOS.

1. Test scores permitting, a highly technical field is preferred. The Recruiter should have access to information which shows what each training pipeline is worth in college credits.
2. Ask the Recruiter about the advancement opportunities in each field as they differ. An overmanned MOS will result in slower advancement times. That means less money throughout her service in the Army. I saw some folks languish in the lower pay grades waiting for someone to retire so that they could advance.

3. Along the same lines ask about Reenlistment bonuses for each MOS. You never now...I planned to do one enlistment and ended up doing five!

4. Where can she be stationed in certain MOS'? Europe? Tropics? Biloxi, Mississippi only?

All that being said, I would strongly recommend the Cryptologic fields if she qualifies. They do interesting work in good conditions and are highly sought after on the outside. They can be stationed in great places too. Just my two cents...Good luck!

If they were tasked with it they would.

Seven year military recruiter here with top production awards.

I have no interest in giving you bad advice but by the first dozen or so responses I saw that the 'well meaning' freepers have no clue about this.

First off, she/you need to determine what it is that you really want to gain from an enlistment.

Is it money for college? Is it skill training? Is it just to get the hell away from mom and dad?!!

Each service has something to offer.

Obviously I have some biases, but I'm not on a quota any more so it doesn't matter to me which service you choose.

If you have questions, you can freemail me.

"Some people have more to offer their country than sitting on a tank shooting at people"

Isn't that what WAR is all about? No matter how many bombs are dropped on target, the Grunts on the ground still have to in and mop up.

I love the Air Force style.

But is having a job that is almost non military what the daughter wants?

Some people join the military to have a military experience, evidently you didn't.

She has to take the ASVAB and phyical before even being offered any enlistment options.

The recruiter screens the applicant and 'sells' their service. Almost never will they sell a specific job or option upfront. Too many things like marijuana use, colorlindness, low aptitude scores, etc could restrict opportunities.

After deciding which branch (and sometimes jobs or options) the applicant goes to MEPPS for the physical. If all goes well, the afternoon is spent with the recruiting guidance councellor who will show options based her qualifications and interests.

Training classes, just like college classes, are already scheduled out sometimes 12 months. When classes are filled, they no longer show up as options, just like when college classes fill.

Hard to fill skills will also carry options and incentives.

Sometimes simple jobs have incentives because they are hard to fill. Don't automatically discount these type of jobs; look long term at what the incentives (cash bonus, loan repayment, college fund etc) might do for her.

She should also get plenty of video or written info on skill training and other options. The military has no intereest in lying to fill their quotas, it serves no purpose.

All options will be in writing before she signs.

She'll sign for eight years in a combination of acive and reserve duty.

She may be on delayed enlistment up to a year however they don't normally put females on long enlistment due to historical experience that the longer a young woman in in delayed entry the less likely she is to actually ship out.

Tell the sergeant that you are talking to a Ring Recruiter former Station Commander and RTNCO.

Me.

Yeah, I ran an office, was a trainer and ops guy.

Let me know if she's a 3A or not.

If my daughter was going to sign up, the father in me would want her in the Air Force.
I take it it is last on your list of acceptable branches of service. You don't seem to respect it as much as the rest.
I might almost be insulted.

If she gets the school or MOS she wants, make sure that she knows that the schooling can get yanked for the simplest indescretions. I just counseled a Nuke school candidate. He's gonna lose his school, bonus, etc.

This post is dead-on! LOL. I remember going out into a field excercise with a bunch of Air Force punks...they had an air conditioned tent! They had plenty of fuel, a generator, the works.

I thought I was living in luxery with a cot and a GP small tent...with 4 guys.

Your buddies here have made it clear that the USAF is the girlie service...(Squantos you know I'm not talking about your and yours....)

You make it seem like the USAF is someplace for women to go when they can't handle rough challenges.

Now I've seen a Hollywood beautiful Marine working supply in Camp Fallujah Iraq....and dykish looking women in all branches...but this really isn't supposed to be about looks but about the beginning of a career for a young woman.

And recommending a service because it is the 'easiest' or your preference really does her no service at all.

Take your time but DON'T SIGN ANYTHING! This decision can take months. Listen to everyone's talking points and come back to this forum later with some details...
