House Conservatives Slam Immigration Bill
Fox News ^ | 3-30-06 | AP

WASHINGTON — House conservatives criticized President Bush, accused the Senate of fouling the air, said prisoners rather than illegal farm workers should pick America's crops and denounced the use of Mexican flags by protesters Thursday in a vehement attack on legislation to liberalize U.S. immigration laws. "I say let the prisoners pick the fruits," said Rep. Dana Rohrabacher of California, one of more than a dozen Republicans who took turns condemning a Senate bill that offers an estimated 11 million illegal immigrants an opportunity for citizenship.

I hope one of them runs for POTUS. Either one has my vote at this point. American needs a Conservative Republican Representative with fire in his belly and right for America and Americans on his side to run and win.

In the areas where fruit and vegetables need picking by large numbers of people, the majority of those on all the social programs are illegals.

Thats true with both parties.

However, to my surprise (sarcasm) the Democrats seem to be more elitist, and smug about this than you might think.

Agreed. I called Brownback's local office and his Washington office to complain. I thought he took an oath of office to uphold the law of the land. I don't think that includes voting for illegal immigration.

You and me both. I mistakenly thought I was getting conservatism when I voted for my senator.

C Span 2 has the senate on now..senators spent little time on the bill and just a few hours on amnesty/guest worker...talking about the definition of amnesty and the bs that some people are saying isn't amnesty..blacks law dictionary points to the 1986 amnesty as an example of amnesty..

what do we pay these people for?

And I just weep for our nation.

Welcome to the club. I fear God is not going to look kindly on what the greatest generation left for their kids. I am glad I am old enough that I probably will not live to see the final crumble, but I can certainly see a loose brick here and there for sure.

I'm convinced of one thing. A Conservative Republican will not be running from the Senate, a Conservative will not be running from the House - that is pro-HR 4437.

I think Vicente Fox will soon be unemployed, he cold probably run pretty strong here.

Hey dana, why don't you give up your tax payer paid perks and be a good American and work in the fields. Set an example.

And there I as afraid you would miss an opportunity......

"why don't you give up your tax payer paid perks and be a good American and work in the fields."

I have seen some of your posts recently that indicate people should try going out and "work in the fields" on the pretense that these are jobs that American's will not do.

My first summer job was picking figs in Fresno California back in 1966.

The heat was always over 100 degrees and you had to wear long sleeve shirts to ensure that the fig juice did not touch your skin.

My fellow workers were all grown men here illegally to try and support their families, and they hated me (and my best friend) because we were taking jobs from other illegals.

I lasted two days.

You could only get prisoners (which I support) or illegals to do this work.

We should arrest the illegals and have them work the fields until they are sent back to their homeland.

"Detassling"

Corn has to be detassled so it doesn't pollinate itself. If it does, you get weaker corn that isn't so sweet. The detassling itself consists of walking up and down rows of corn for eight hours a day, doing nothing but popping the tassels out of the corn and dropping them on the ground. If you've ever seen a row of corn, you'll find some of them are half a mile long and five to eight feet tall. Imagine eight hours a day, pop, pop, pop, in the heat and humidity of a Midwestern summer, sweating and sneezing and twitching and getting "corn rash" from brushing against the leaves.

OK, you win. :~)

That job makes picking figs look good.

I detasseled for five years in Michigan, for Pioneer seed corp. Started the summer when I was 13 for $3.35 per hour, and the last season I was 17, a supervisor, making $9.50 per hour. I'm white, American, US-born, etc - you know "too lazy to do the hard work that Mexicans do". Instilled a work ethic that is with me to this day - and now I'm 33 and making six-figures a year.

Today's American teenagers will never learn that lesson, because "Juan" is out there doing the job - for $3.35 probably.

That is the story that goes untold, these are the jobs that you do as a teenager.
