Immigration is not the pox neo-Know Nothings make it out to be

Princeton University sociologist Douglas S. Massey reports that 62 percent of illegal immigrants pay income taxes (via withholding) and 66 percent contribute to Social Security. Forbes magazine notes that Mexican illegals aren't clogging up the social-services system: only 5 percent receive food stamps or unemployment assistance; 10 percent send kids to public schools.

Economist Larry Kudlow praises Hispanic entrepreneurship: "According to 2002 Census Bureau data, Hispanics are opening businesses at a rate three times faster than the national average. In addition, there were almost 1.6 million Hispanic-owned businesses generating $222 billion in revenue in 2002."

~~~~snip~~~~
Total crime and property crime in California are half what they were in 1980; violent crime has fallen more than a third. The state's Hispanic population during that time has increased 120 percent.
Using Kalifonia as the model? Nearly 2 million ex-Californians have come to my state in the past 15 years trying to escape that impending shipwreck of that particular bastion of Totalitarian Socialism.
Many of the signs I saw, claim this is their country and they want us to leave. We really need to cater to that group. NOT
Eighty percent of the kids being Hispanic does not mean that they were all the children of illegal aliens.
Strawman. I haven't seen any of the posters here or opponents of illegal immigration attempting to revive the Know Nothing movement. Strawmen only scare liberals and bird-brained RiNO's... the real 'Know-Nothings'.
You knew these criminal's immigration status?
Would you have felt better about your problems if they had been brought on by native-born citizens?
"I'm not going to get all twisty-pantsed over his choice of words, since it's not really crucial to his argument"
His choice of words for the title is central to the argument, as it is the basis for his entire hypothesis.
Bush wanted to make illegal aliens pay a FINE for being here illegally before they applied for a work visa and allowed to stay.
Wrong.
Bush's proposal has the guest worker paying a "one time fee".
This will be the same "one time fee" that folks not here illegally will pay to get a guest worker visa, after all the illegals get one first.
So, there is no fine, and they get a visa before law abiding aliens.
Feel free to check out the White House fact sheet, which I've posted on FR many times.
Yeah, you know how many illegal immigrants come here to open small businesses.
There are tons in Texas who do. Much more so than the Katrina crowd.
I did get out of your way Luis. I dicided not to respond to your first post to me. This is the second. If you don't want to converse with me, don't communicate with me.
I want every crime committed by illegal immigrants to stop. The only way to achieve that is to enforce the laws of the United States of America. When there are no more illegal immigrants in the U.S., no U.S. Citizens will die, be raped, be molested, be robbed or subjected to any other crimes at the hands of an illegal.
I support this outcome and you don't. Did I leave anything out?
Nope. They aren't citizens. I want them deported.
I'm a citizen. When I break the law and get caught I pay the fine whether it's monetary or prison time or both. The punishment for being an illegal alien is deportation which is very seldom levied on the perpetrator. Catch and release.
Ask the SSA where the $500+ billoion dllars in their arnings Suspense File came from.
Please explain to me.... illegal alien pays SS taxes? how exactly? And 500 billion? That seems like an absurd amount. I worked for a company that employed a lot of illegals, we didn't pay SS taxes on them. That is the nature of employing illegals.
"Since that's punishment, then you are satisfied with that plan?"
The fines are ridiculously low. They amount to less than the entitlement spending that each illegal eats up in one year. Granting legal status will triple the entitlements. The fines are an empty gesture and do not target the MAJOR criminals who employ illegal labor in the first place.
"The extra costs of providing a bi-lingual education are not offset by immigrant tax payments."
"Using data from the Census Bureau's current population survey, Steven Camarota, director of research at the Center for Immigration Studies, an advocacy group in Washington that favors more limits on immigration, estimated that 3.8 million households headed by illegal immigrants generated $6.4 billion in Social Security taxes in 2002."
Camarota is no illegal alien apologist, he's quite the opposite. Until the day that we come to grips with the fact that the Federal government benefits financially from illegal aliens, we will not begin to solve this problem.
$6.4 billion dollars pumped yearly into the Federal coffers by illegal aliens who will not file to get their money back buys a whole lot of bilingual education, as well as a lot of looking-the-other-way from politicians.
It's like anything else...just follow the money.
Any idea why California has very few conservatives left? I wish they'd all move back and help some of us push back a little. It would sure make elections a whole lot more fun.
For what it is worth Luis, I don't want to deport 11 million mexians. However, somewhere somehow there has to be some sort of limit, and even a lenient that we can be on worker permits, ultimately that means we have to enforce the law and protec the border. I will say, however, that every illegal convicted of a felony needs to be rounded up and deported.
I would venture to say that at least 95% of the kids in their school with Hispanic surnames are natural born US citizens.
That may be a rebutable presumption but it is also at the core of the debate at hand. The longer term consequences of illegal immigration lends compelling evidence for the need to act with haste.
Children born in the United States to illegal aliens, the children of those anchor babies and in turn their third generation, US citizens are still the consequence of illegal immigration and they are part and parcel of the problems created by unregulated immigration.
These second, third and now fourth generation progeny are, in fact, the chief contributor to the overcrowding in California's public schools, public medical facilities and prison systems. They are, numerically , the plurality in California's gang population which represents the single largest item in California's expenditure for law enforcement, adjudication and incarceration.
The estimate offered, whether accurate or embellished, focuses on a pivotal aspect of the debate over the regulation of immigration. The revision, by Roosevelt era judges, of the original intent of the "under the control of" clause in the 14th Amendment, needs sorely to be challenged and reviewed at the SCOTUS.
Another strawman. Illegal aliens pull far more back out of Fed Coffers BWO welfare programs than they put in.
