Katherine Harris Campaign Loses Core Staff

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Katherine Harris' U.S. Senate campaign lost what was left of its core team when a top adviser, campaign manager, and communications director resigned this weekend.

Harris, a Republican congresswoman challenging incumbent Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson (news, bio, voting record), said Saturday she would introduce new members of her campaign early in the week.

"We are stronger as a campaign today than we were yesterday," Harris said in a press release.

Harris said her campaign has lined up people who believe in her candidacy, are committed, and support the "values of mainstream Florida citizens."

Former campaign manager Jim Dornan, who resigned in November, said, "She had the best people in the country. She can't get any better than that.

"This is a campaign that is spiraling downward by the minute," he said, adding she should drop out of the race.

Among those resigning over the weekend were Ed Rollins, a political adviser to President Reagan; campaign manager Jamie Miller; press secretary Morgan Dobbs; and other key staff.

Phone messages left for Rollins and Dobbs were not immediately returned, while contact information was not found for Miller. Harris didn't immediately return a call Saturday for additional comment.

Her campaign has struggled since announcing plans to challenge Nelson last summer.

For months, GOP leaders in Washington tried recruiting someone else into the race, and Harris' fundraising was slow from the start. Turnover has also been a problem. She recently lost a pollster, a national financial director, treasurer and media consultant.

Advisers urged her to get out of the race. She refused and announced last month that she would spend $10 million of her own money to compete with Nelson, whom she has trailed significantly in several polls.

I still don't understand why the Republicans in power screwed her over....

Maybe they don't have enough dirt on her to control her..... but Nelson is WEAK and can be defeated. The republican voters are looking for anybody to get rid of democrats.... the party is in tatters and the Republicans could easily have won with Harris... what a load.

Somethings not right here...

She's as capable as Ted Kennedy, Feinstein, Snow or Biden... all with room temp IQ's.

Yep. It really looks like the republican party is working harder against her than against Nelson.

I don't care if she would be a good candidate or not. I wouldn't mind just being able to go gaga over her on the news once in a while. :-)

She never should have run -- her campaign was in trouble from day one as she kept being late or cancelling appearances. She wasn't ready to run for Senator and is now dragging down the ticket because she is too stubborn to admit she should pull out.

I see the talking points have been faxed already from the RNC.

I for one cannot wait until November, when Harris mops the floor with Nelson and all of you GOP bootlickers and Harris bashers will slink back under your rocks.

It really looks like the republican party is working harder against her than against Nelson.

They and the staffers who are quitting Harris' campaign are panicking over FL liberal media hit pieces. It's amazing that some people still believe the trash peddled by the liberal media.

It's good that these people are leaving Harris' campaign, anyway. It's clear that their hearts weren't in the race to begin with. Nothing but gutless, feckless, cowardly RINOs, cut from the same velvet fabric that makes up the majority of the GOP.

Correct. That is why Buchanan, Reagan & now Tancredo are so villified by the elites.

I'll look at this positively.

The staff that have departed were failing her.

Bring on the warriors!

Because the RNC is pathetic.  It ought to be labeled the 'RINO EXPRESS.'  Worthless. Absolutely.

Never a dime from me ever again. A pile of mush.

We have to support individual conservative candidates, and not send them through some sort of 'planning 'committee.'

I thought the voters decide who they want to represent them in the House and in the Senate, not the RNC.

They may have won with liberal RINO Spector, but it will cost them, when a good conservative, Santorum (Rove's stooge) loses this November.

Not a very good swap.
