Violinist mom charged with being US environmental terrorist

A mother that gives violin lessons will face trial in the northwestern US state of Washington on charges she was an environmental terrorist, prosecutors said.

Briana Waters, 30, of the famously liberal California city of Berkeley, has pleaded innocent in a Seattle federal court that she that fire bombed a horticulture center in 2001.

A US district court judge allowed Waters to remain free pending the start of her trial in June, but ordered that she turn in her passport and have her whereabouts monitored electronically.

Waters was the first person charged in connection with an attack that destroyed the Center for Urban Horticulture at the University of Washington in May of 2001, according to Emily Langlie of the US Attorney's Office.

The fire was one of a series of arson attacks in the Pacific west that police believe were committed by militant environmental activists linked to the Earth Liberation Front and the Animal Liberation Front.

"This is just one step as we attempt to bring to justice those responsible for the UW Urban Horticulture fire," said John McKay, United States Attorney for the Western District of Washington.

"As we move toward the five-year anniversary of that devastating blaze, I applaud the investigators who have worked so doggedly and diligently to put the pieces of the puzzle together."

Federal prosecutors indicted 13 people last year in connection with arsons branded as "domestic terror."

Two of those people were part of "an overarching conspiracy" to fire bomb the horticulture center, prosecutors said.

A mother and a self-employed violin teacher, Waters' background included being a "tree-sitter" who perched in branches to save ancient trees from logging.

Waters would face a mandatory minimum punishment of 35 years in prison if convicted as charged with arson and using a destructive device to commit a violent crime.

I’m sure that very little is being divulged, in order to prevent weakening the case against others.

35 years is far short of what these demons deserve.

As a matte of fact, the fifth largest forest owner family in America was looking as fast growing cypress. I was the one who got them into that research area.

Prior literature held that cypress annual growth was “imperceptable to 3/8” per year.

A colleague had a variety (NON-HYBREDIZED) which grew 1.3 inches in diameter annually.

I also told them of an oak which grew 1.5” in diameter. I still have the core samples from those trees.

The Green terrorists are simply dangerous collectivist whackos.

Catch ‘em. DON’T release ‘em.

LOL...Flash from the past . He hasn’t resorted to firearms yet although he does carry for his the protection off the job. He has rigging he uses to climb the trees and with an assistant they put these monkeys in in webbing and another harness lower them down with more rigging

I'm sure the wood that the violin is made of came from a tree that died of natural causes.

Which would explain it's hollow nature. May still be some bugs in there.

Well, drat. Moving the trial date means that NOW we have to wait until NEXT YEAR to play “Goad The Troll”.

Reading between the lines, though, I sorta feel pity for it. Just think, what if the troll’s really this rockstar’s father like he claimed? I mean, there ain’t a drink on the planet strong enough to make THAT pain go away.

There are all kinds of things in life that you can screw up — sometimes pretty badly — then come back and completely fix it so everything’s fine. When it comes to raising kids, though, there’s a serious limit to the amount of screwing up that is fixable. Beyond that limit lies a relational Niagra Falls where all you can do is watch and hope the damage doesn’t end up being fatal for anyone.

Good. Track down every one of them. Let the message go forth...do something stupid like blow up labs or burn down buildings, and sooner or later, the law WILL get you, and your cute kid won’t help you on the defense stand.

Surprise, Surprise -- from Berkeley.

Not just Berkeley, but enviro-central itself:

According to the indictment, the conspirators met in the spring of 2000, in Santa Cruz, Calif., where one conspirator demonstrated how to build a destructive device. In the summer of 2000, there was another secret meeting in Tucson, Ariz., where they discussed the selection of targets. On July 31, 2000, that SOLONDZ and others are alleged to have destroyed five acres of canola being grown by Monsanto in Dusty, Wash. In the winter of 2001, members of the conspiracy held a secret meeting in Olympia, Wash. Shortly after that, in March, 2001, it is alleged that SOLONDZ and others cut the bark (girdled) on approximately 800 hybrid poplar trees at three different Oregon State University locations near Corvallis, Ore.

The indictment describes how SOLONDZ, WATERS, Rodgers and two other members of the conspiracy used destructive devices to destroy the Center for Urban Horticulture at the University of Washington. The May 21, 2001, fire caused over $2 million in damage. The center has been rebuilt at a cost of about $7 million. Ironically, there were no genetically engineered plants at the facility, but the fire did destroy samples of rare and endangered plants. Some researchers lost important data for their work to protect endangered plant species.
