Bronze statue of Pope John Paul II in Chennai, India. (Sculptor is an Indian Muslim!)

Chennai, April 1: A 22-foot-high bronze statue of Pope John Paul II will be unveiled in Chennai tomorrow. The statue, costing Rs 400,000, has been sculpted by Shihan Hussaini, eminent sculptor and karate expert.

The statue would be unveiled on the premises of the Sculpture Mission at Besant Nagar, Chennai, to coincide with the first death anniversary of St John Paul II, tomorrow.

Shihan said this would be an event of historical significance as this was the world's first statue of the Pope sculpted soon after his death. The statue was completed and mounted on a pedestal six days after his death, making it the world's first statue of the "people's Pope".

Sculptor Shihan, a post-graduate student of the Government College of Fine Arts, Chennai, who shot into fame with his theme statues of Kalpana Chawla, brigand Veerappan's capture and the jailed Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, says the statue is a personal tribute to the "miraculous powers of the Pope which saved his life on three occasions".

The composition, made with bronze, metal reinforced fibre and concrete, depicts the Pontiff standing on top of three large steps blessing the sculptor and the world with his right hand. In his left hand, he holds a large cross, carrying the globe on it. A dove is seen taking off from the globe.

There is another row of 26 small steps in between the three steps. The sculptor explains that the Pontiff had gone through two stages in his lifetime. In the first, he was Karol Wojteyela...in the second he was the Pope and now he stands at the third step, awaiting beatification as a saint, says Shihan.

The 26 steps stand for the number of years of his papacy and the dove on top of a globe represents the efforts he took to spread the concept of peace in the world through Christianity.

The statue will be on public display on the premises of the Sculpture Mission till a suitable place is allotted by the state government.

Shihan says he has made a representation to the state government to allot a place for the statue. (R Rangaraj)

Bronze statue of Pope John Paul II to be unveiled on Sunday
Chennai: A 22-feet high bronze statue of Pope John Paul II, created by sculptor Shihan Hussaini, will be unveiled here on April two on the first death anniversary of the Pope.

Bearing the inscription 'The Third Step-St John Paul II', the statue, costing Rs four lakh, was completed and mounted on a pedestal six days after the Pope's death, a press release from the sculptor, who is also karate exponent, said here today.

http://www.newkerala.com/news2.php?action=fullnews&id=34914

This shouldn't surprise anyone. Among his many public apostasies, JP2 is famous for kissing a Koran:

It is a shocking falsehood and slander to accuse Pope John Paul II of "apostasy" for kissing a Koran. This "kiss" was an ambiguous gesture that made me (among others) uncomfortable, but you fail to appreciate that Pope John Paul II kissed ALL gifts that people gave him (books, sombreros, sports jerseys, photographs, works of art, etc.) as a sign, not of religious attachment to the gift, but of respect for the giver.

He also kissed the ground whenever he flew to a visit a country, not because he worshipped the dirt, but to show respect for the country.

The document Dominus Iesus, principally authored by then-Cardinal Ratzinger but authorized by the Pope and certainly expressing Pope John Paul's views, started that religions other than Christianity are "gravely deficient" and their rituals can constitute "an obstacle to salvation" for their followers.

Pope John Paul II has been criticized for the way in which he showed love and respect for all, but to accuse him of apostasy is a despicable distortion.

There are a lot of images that seem repulsive to the body, but mean everything to the soul. Why would someone embrace the instrument that cause such passionate pain?

Here's another image that horrifies the body, but frees the soul:

I know why Pope JP2 embraced the instrument that has destroys so many. Such unabashed Charity liberates souls in purgatory because of his Pure selflessness. It's not unlike Pope Joe B16's willing dialog of embracing protesting hearts to his Jesus-given authority to guide all souls to Salvation.

So if this is apostasy of the Spirit of Christianity:

Then what is this?

Does humility go too far with our sensibilities?

Don't our hearts know what Jesus's has written upon them? Wouldn't we prefer His sublime presence?

Do we REALLY want a powerful leadership that lords it over us? Must we always desire a self-serving one who always makes his presence felt? Haven't we had examples of that enough?

Just as the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath and the Pope is the Keeper of His Bride, the Church.

Furthermore, the relatively young English tongue, filled with twisted and ill-defined meanings, is not the proper language to examine Church history.

Your better off arguing your statements to St Michael and the Blessed Virgin Mary than to convince Apostolic hearts. Let your quarrel rest in the Supernatural, because irreconciability has no space for in Catholic Dogma.

I hazard to guess that only One has earned the ability to be Judge.

I prefer forgiveness, kindness, and above all MERCY. Those wanting to play the Accuser might want to pre-examine their future master and fate.

"Father, forgive them, they know not what they do."

The purpose of diabolic action is to remove souls from the Mystical Body of Christ.

For the sake of Mercy and to spare judgment (of course), I think most act in ignorance (myself included). If souls truly understood the Presence of Christ in the Holy Eucharist, they'd never dream to offend the Sacraments nor the Ever Virgin Mary.

Some Christians operate with mutilated Bibles devoid of the books that exemplify intercessions for lost souls in Purgatory. Children raised of the same protest run the danger of suckling upon such hatred that denies forgiveness and must have an enemy to accuse and destroy. The focus of unforgivenss finds its object upon the Authority of the Church. I suspect it's a Cain syndrome of jealousy and hunger.

All life follows the Sacraments. Without the Sacraments how can there be Life? Baptism is a great start, and the most important. But Life demands more than Baptism by water. Life demands the Baptism Christ receive with Fire from His Father's anger for all sin. The blank check He wrote was the Last Supper when Jesus gave us Holy Communion. We must be humble enough to Reconcile our sins and eat the Fruit of Life from the Tree of Life, the Crucified Lord.

"One does not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes forth from the mouth of God."

Jesus is the Word of God, the Word made Flesh, and He is present in the Holy Eucharist.
