It was April Fool's Day this news item was reported so I waited for confirmation that indeed this event actually happened.
In London, former President Bill Clinton told the BBC that he would shake hands with Hamas if the Arab terrorist group provided the same assurances on rejecting terror as the late Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
Asked if he would negotiate with the hard-line terrorists who have won elections in the Palestinian Authority, Clinton responded: "If they made the same assurances that Arafat did. He had made private assurances, and he made public assurances, that he did not support terror any more and would try to restrain it. So, if Hamas would say, suppose they say, 'OK, look, we can't change our theory, we can't change our document, we can't change our history, but we're in government now and the policy of the Palestinian government is no to terror and yes to negotiations. As long as we're in government, we'll honor that policy.' If they did that, I would support dealing with them."
This statement leaves me wondering, "Is it mental illness that drives people to make the same mistakes over and over and over again? Or, is it that they are simply evil?"
I waited several days to address this posturing by Clinton because I was so angered by it. I needed to calm down. Let's take this crazy idea apart.
Yasser Arafat's renunciations of terrorism were as phony and meaningless as a Bill Clinton promise. Is there actually a human being on the planet who doesn't get that yet?
By the time Arafat died his miserable death, has any good been accomplished by negotiating with him? Had any lives been saved?
It would take someone as morally corrupt and intellectually bankrupt as Bill Clinton to use Arafat as the model for future peace negotiations. This is beyond astonishing. It was all a game with Arafat. The record is clear now. He never had any intentions of stopping the violence and the attacks on Jews. It was just a strategy he employed to keep the money flowing in from the United States and European Union. It was a ploy to buy time and a position of strength from which to defeat his enemy.
Does anyone even need to be reminded of this any more? Evidently Bill Clinton does.
The one thing that is refreshing about Hamas is that there is less hypocrisy and deception at work within its leadership. Hamas officials tell you where they stand. They stand for the destruction of the Jewish state and the eradication of the Jewish people. Period. End of story.
But all Hamas would have to do to win over Bill Clinton and presumably other equally idiotic Western leaders is to say some magic words. They wouldn't have to mean them any more than Arafat did. Because in international politics, it's not what you do that counts, but what you say.
Arafat did not renounce Islamic terrorism. He practically invented it. I dubbed him the godfather of modern Islamic terrorism. Without Arafat, there would be no Osama bin Laden. Until the day he went to Hell, he never stopped practicing and preaching the violent "liberation" of Israel at least not in Arabic. What he told Clinton privately doesn't really matter or count. What he told anyone privately or publicly shouldn't make a bit of difference. It's what people do that counts. And Arafat remained a bloody, abhorrent monster until the say he died.
Clinton is coaching these Hamas monsters to wear a disguise like Arafat did. That's what it comes down to. In fact, it should surprise no one that Clinton would shake hands with these fiends. Anyone who would shake hands with Arafat would likely shake hands with Hamas. There's no moral difference.
And who would want to shake hands with Clinton? This is a man who, like Arafat, would say or do whatever is necessary to further his own agenda. In fact, he would say or do anything for a fee. Let's face it, Bill Clinton would shake hands with the Devil himself if it would mean the spotlight, money, power and babes.
But there is an important lesson here because of what Bill Clinton represents. He represents the perspective, the "conventional wisdom," the worldview of the Democratic Party.
When Clinton says he would negotiate with Hamas if they changed their tune, what he is doing is explaining the national security policy of the Democratic Party. This is the way they decide who is good and who is evil, who is dangerous and who is not on the basis of what they say.
They never learned the lesson that appeasement never works. They never learned the lesson of Neville Chamberlain. They never learned the lesson of Oslo. They are prepared to keep making the same mistakes over and over again.
Results don't count. It's the process that is important.
And remember to whom he is married.
(Denny Crane: "I Don't Want To Socialize With A Pinko Liberal Democrat Commie. Say What You Like About Republicans. We Stick To Our Convictions. Even When We Know We're Dead Wrong.")
The phrase "stuck on stupid" comes to mind.
That's also a good definition of liberalism.
They don't want to be judged on their results, just their intentions.
(I'll never forget John Edwards saying that if John Kerry gets elected, Christopher Reeve will get up out of that wheelchair and walk!)
Snort!!

The Israeli's may want peace and the Americans may want peace, but the linch pin in all of this "peace" is the Arabs and they've repeatedly declared what their intentions are and it isn't "peace".
Arab and Islamic intentions are to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth.
I said much of the same thing a couple of days ago.
Folks better look at how many Arabic countries are in the UN.
Nobody has shown me yet where Bubba can't be voted in as UN SG. Garner enough support in the right areas of the world and...WALLAH! UN SG.
he's gotta do something, what with hs wife peeping through windows and all...
The Next S-G
No one who is not acceptable to both Beijing and Washington can get this job, and the two countries have significantly different views of what the role of the United Nations should be.
Snip...Bear in mind also that at the United Nations, Asia may not be what you think. For bureaucratic and historical reasons, the Asian group runs from the shores of the Mediterranean to the far islands of the South Pacific; it includes most of the Arab world and even Turkey, which has, in Kemal Dervis, currently head of the U.N. Development Program, an excellent dark-horse candidate respected by all.
About the Author: Richard Holbrooke, an ambassador to the United Nations during the Clinton administration, writes a monthly column for The Post.
Well, Bubba is acceptable to China.
and it's a proven fact that Bubba accepts from the Chinese...LOL
Under UN bylaws, the Secretary General may not be from a country with a seat on the Security Council. Sure, thats what it says, but, as history has taught us, rules are made to be broken.
Is U-Haul international?
All you have to do is move...
