Some emergency officials made a dangerous discovery when they were looking at the damage to a 1991 Cadillac on Route 40 at about 3 a.m. Saturday, WTAE Channel 4 Action News reported.
The car had reportedly been in a single-car accident.
Fire officials found a pipe bomb on the ground outside the car, according Lt. Bernard Petrovsky, with the Pennsylvania State Police.
One eyewitness to the accident told police that a passenger in the vehicle ran into the woods with some things in his hands.
After a quick search of the area, police found three more pipe bombs.
"So we have a total of four pipe bombs we've recovered from the scene of this accident," Petrovsky said.
As the bomb squad was called in, the driver of the crashed car, Derrick P. McKulka, 23, was arrested.
"He's going to be charged with possession of weapons of mass destruction, DUI, reckless endangering and risking a catastrophe," Petrovsky said.
Police are investigating as to why McKulka had pipe bombs in his possession, but do not believe that he has any ties to terrorist groups.
"They were functioning pipe bombs," Petrovsky said. "They had the potential of harming someone within a 300-foot radius. They were definitely something very serious."
Due to the threat, police closed Route 40 for several hours as the bomb squad blew up the devices at the scene of the accident.

A pipe bomb is a weapon of mass destruction?
I've got a helluva sinus headache this afternoon, but it looks to me that if you spelled that driver's name backwards it'd come out something like "Allahu Akhbar"...

The gasoline in the car had more destructive potential than the 4 pipe bombs.
Im not defending this pinhead, but I hate this kind of crap
They'll probably call me a Master Bomb Maker or something. It's a darn good thing I don't own a large house on a big piece of land or I'd be accused of having a 'compound'.
We both know that's a death sentence if the FBI gets involved.

My guess is young radical anarchic artiste. Check web blogs, such as myspace.
What's the upside of having up to four pipe bombs in your posession? Look, I realize we're not talking about a MOAB or a nuke, but if you throw 1-4 of these into a group of people, you're going to have a number of indescriminent deaths and serious injuries. I call that mass destruction on a limited scale.
I'm not as offended by this particular instance of classification as you are, but I do understand where you're coming from and have thought the same thing in other instances.
Do we have enough jails? LOL

ROTFLMAO!! My wife and I have said those very things for years! Makes me feel good to know that we're not by our lonesome out here. She always said that we're dead meat if they come in the house, they'll find a gun cabinet full of guns and Bibles around the house!--I mean COMPOUND. We're toast.
When it's convenient for it to be, yes...
Next thing you know they'll classify a ball bat as a weapon of mass destruction
Guns and Bibles and Conservatives, oh my! Guns and Bibles and Conservatives, oh my! Guns and Bibles and.........
I'm going to keep my mouth shut. Not one word will escape my pie hole other than "I want a lawyer". My entire family has been instructed to say exactly the same thing.
The neighbors, however, have orders to describe me as 'a quiet man who keeps to himself.' In fact I'm nothing like that, but I've always wanted to hear myself described that way.
If they manage to crack the gun safes the press around here will have a field day breathlessly describing my arsenal of 'fully automatic revolvers, high powered assault weapons, explosive devices, bomb making materials', and 'right wing literature'.
Hell, they'll probably describe my golf clubs as 'assault clubs'. Considering how badly I play golf that might not be far from the truth.

It must have been a hell of a pipe bomb.
It could kill or injure multiple individuals in a single use, so I'd say yes.
