Hunting With Cheney a Blast (Who shot the VP?)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | April 9, 2006 | Jeff Jones

Who shot Dick Cheney?

Years before the vice president accidentally shot a lawyer on a Texas quail hunt, Cheney himself was on the receiving end of an errant shotgun blast during a quail outing in New Mexico, a prominent Carlsbad Republican says.

Carlsbad Mayor Bob Forrest told the Journal he doesn't know for sure who fired the shot that accidentally peppered Cheney with shotgun pellets during the late-1990s hunt that included himself, his twin brother, and Sen. Pete Domenici, R-N.M.

But the senator wasn't the triggerman, Forrest said, adding he and brother Dick Forrest were among hunters firing their shotguns.

Cheney was unhurt but miffed after the peppering, Forrest said. "It did pelt him pretty good," recalled Forrest, now 70. "He said, 'You guys watch where you're shooting!' He was very offended ...

"We're probably the only twins in the United States that have shot the vice president and never have gone to jail," Forrest joked, while maintaining that the actual shooter remains unknown.

Cheney was chief executive of the Halliburton company at the time and would become vice president in 2001.

Bob Forrest said that the incident happened in southern New Mexico on the Three Rivers Ranch of the late Colin McMillan, who served as assistant secretary of Defense under President George H.W. Bush.

Well, well, well. So Cheney was himself peppered in the face with pellets and didn't even think to mention it when he made his apology and interview with Brit Hume. He's class all the way.

I've been peppered several times. Mostly at very long distances. The one time it broke skin, I was the one at fault. I peek from behind cover before approaching. If you bird hunt a lot it's gonna happen.

Everybody in this part of the world who's worth a damn has been peppered with birdshot one time or another.

I have.

My boss once made the mistake of inviting me along on a stock-tank dove hunt. Also made the mistake of parking his new white pickup somewhere out away from the water hole.

You guessed it, I peppered it.

Served him right, by the way. He should have known better than that, and I told him it was not a good idea at the time. When the birds are flyin', so is the shot. Everything you want preserved should be with you, with the hunters close together and back-to-back.

With that arrangement, and an understanding that you don't shoot over the water, everything should be hunky-dory.

Just about everyone who has hunted quail has been peppered.

I'm pretty surprised the media is reporting this. And pretty classy that Cheney didn't mention it himself during his interview with Brit Hume last month.

...a prominent Carlsbad Republican says...

I thought I had heard that Bob Forrest was a Democrat (although a good friend of Senator Pete)...
