Edwards Backs Effort To Censure Bush

WATERLOO, Iowa -- Former Sen. John Edwards, noting reports that the Bush administration approved the leak of classified information, said Saturday that he backs congressional efforts to censure the president.

"I think that George Bush deserves to be censured," said Edwards, while opening a three-day campaign swing through Iowa on Saturday.

Edwards pointed to reports that Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney authorized leaking the identity of CIA agent Valerie Plame as evidence the Bush administration is out of control. He said it was a perfect example of why Democrats need to regain control of Congress.

Cheney's former chief of staff, I. Lewis Libby, has been charged in the leak investigation and, according to court documents in the case, has said that he acted at the direction of Bush and Cheney.

The White House has not denied those claims, saying only that the president has the power to declassify information.

Edwards said voters were jarred by reports that the president would seek to leak classified information for "purely for political gain."

"Leaking classified information for political purposes is really ugly," he said.

Sen. Russell Feingold, D-Wis., has introduced censure legislation, saying Bush violated the law in not fully informing Congress or getting approval from a secretive court to conduct an eavesdropping program. A censure resolution, if adopted, would amount to Congress scolding the president. Few Democrats have embraced the proposal.

Edwards campaigned for Democratic legislative candidates in a series five stops through Eastern Iowa Saturday. He was planning to continue that effort Sunday with four more stops, and is scheduled to meet with Democratic legislators early next week to discuss election strategy.

Edwards finished in second place during the 2004 Precinct Caucuses in Iowa, a showing that propelled him onto the Democratic ticket.

You forgot to include a "Barf Alert" in this one.

If the President declassifies info, then it is a "leak". If a senator "leaks" this stuff is is "news".

W should have Cheney start working on censuring Democrat members of the Senate. If the hard left wing can pass a useless act of censure of the President, then the executive can do likewise of the democrats. The advantage the President has is that he does not need to have a vote.

Heads up, people.

This is all about one thing and one thing only.

US casualties in Iraq are plummetting. The trend is powerful and in place since Oct of last year. This is the horror scenario for the Democrats and as this trend asserts itself and becomes relentless there will be no denying it.

Bush is winning.

It is the one thing they cannot have happen because it will destroy the DNC. They are desperate to keep attention off of it.

It's hard to believe this main-stream centrist wouldn't run again for re-election. Go figure. What a left wing nut job. I geuss he's still brooding from the butt-kicking he got in his debate with Cheney in '04.

If this were true, then Pres. Bush would have opened ALL x42i's presidential documents. He would have allowed viewing 8 years worth of x42i's oval office video tapes.

You did not miss anything. What the court documents tell us is that W authorized the leak of declassified information regarding Iraq's WMD programs. This was supposedly done to shore up support for going into Iraq.

Nowhere, NOWHERE, does anything mention that the President authorized leaking classified information on the true identity of "covert agent Valerie Plame".
