(04/12/06 - DURHAM) - Many say that because the primary election is three weeks from today, the Duke lacrosse rape investigation is turning into a political case for the district attorney.
Current Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong wants to keep his job. Prosecutor-turned-private attorney Freda Black wants his job, as does civil and criminal attorney Keith Bishop.
At a forum at North Carolina Central on Tuesday, someone asked Nifong what he'd say to voters. Nifong responded, "This is not about an election. This is about doing justice for the victim in this case. And this is about doing justice for the people who might have the finger pointed at them."
Freda Black watched Tuesday's forum and commented on how Nifong is handling the case.
"By using the word 'justice,' I have a problem with that," she said. "I think justice requires a district attorney or an assistant district attorney to be closed mouth about any pending case."
Black wouldn't say whether the controversy surrounding the investigation is helping or hurting her campaign, but her other opponent, Keith Bishop, did.
"I think it's helping my campaign," he said.
Bishop and Black might be running against each other, but there's at least one thing they agree on.
"If I was district attorney, the first thing I would do is gather the facts before I jump out in front of the media." Bishop said.
All three candidates will be in front of the media Wednesday night. Voters can ask them questions in a forum. It will be held at the Durham County Courthouse from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.
This is an "OJ In Reverse" in the making.But in this case,if there's nobody charged,or convicted,there'll be rioting in the streets.
This DA is so far out on a limb he'll never get back. At least a cat has got a chance to live if it falls. He's going to charge at least one of these kids, ruin his life, with absolutely nothing. The kids name and picture will be plastered everywhere just so he can charge someone before this election. It's such crap.
The DA said yesterday the alleged victim didn't identify anyone until just last week, two weeks after the alleged crime. Also, the accuser said her dad came to the hospital. Her dad said he didn't find out about the alleged crime until a reporter came to the door.
The kids were stupid for hiring a stripper to come to one of their parties but this case is pure C-R-A-P.
I saw the tape of the DA speaking to a hostile crowd yesterday "Your asking why I have not arrested a bunch of white people when only four out of 44 are thought to be guilty?"

This is about doing justice for the victim in this case - I imagine most rape reports result in the prosecutor holding 70 interviews and an open question and answer session at the victims university.

That part is not surprising - lots of girls wouldn't want to have the talk with daddy about how thir job stripping led to a situation where they were alledgedly raped.
This guy looks to be dragging this out, until after the election.
If he loses, it's somebody else's problem.
Maybe, but only as an excuse to try to loot. Any "righteous indignation" would have to be faked mightily since it's pretty evident that the accusing girl is a pig. Sounds like another Tawana Brawley, in fact. Not necessarily the stuff of riots.
That's not the point. The point is she reported that her dad came to visit her in the hospital and that's why she reported it, because she didn't want to let down her dad.

Good point. I heard most of it and, several times, he actually stood up, and fairly strongly, to the race-obsessed gathering at NCCU.
I don't think his performace in all this is quite as bad as it is being portrayed.
Lots of "experts" are saying that it is very common to have a rape and no DNA found. And then there is the evidence from the medical examination that is sitting on the DA's desk.
I certainly don't intend to defend all his statements or actions. But he did show some courage yesterday, and he does now have a difficult situation.
I am not ready to totally condemn him.
