Peggy Noonan: At the Immigration Rally--Having an open heart doesn't mean supporting open borders
OpinionJournal ^ | 4/13/06 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 4/13/2006, 4:23:42 PM by blitzgig

I love immigrants. That's not important or relevant, but it's where I start. I love them so much I often have the impulse to kiss their hands. I am not kidding. I love them because they are brave. They left their country and struggled their way to this one to get a better life.

-snip-

We are a sovereign nation operating under the rule of law. That, in fact, is why many immigrants come here. They come from places where the law, such as it is, is corrupt, malleable, limiting. Does it make sense to subvert our own laws to facilitate the entrance of those in pursuit of government by law? Whatever our sentiments and sympathies as individuals, America has the right, and the responsibility, to protect the integrity of its borders, to make the laws by which immigrants are granted entrance, and to enforce those laws.

I think open-borders proponents are, simply, wrong. I think those who call good people like members of the voluntary border patrols "yahoos" are snobs. I think those whose primary concern is preserving the Hispanic vote for the Democratic Party, or not losing the Hispanic vote for the Republican Party, are being cynical, selfish, and stupid, too. It's not all about who gets what vote, it's about continuing a system of laws that has allowed America to become, among many other things, a place immigrants want to come to. And it's about admitting immigrants in a coherent, orderly, legal manner, with an eye first to what America needs. That's how you continue a good thing, which is what we've had. That's how you leave Americans who've been here for a while grateful for immigration, and immigrants, and loving them, and even wanting, sometimes, to kiss their hands.

Great. Ramble on about how much immigrants love our "rule of law" and their first experience with this country is how little we regard "rule of law".

We lost 40 million + US citizens since Roe V Wade and all the kids the first wave of the American Holocaust...

Not sure if God will settle for just 11 million taking their place...got a few to go yet...

Hang on...stay home and learn Espanol...gas will be too expensive to go on vacation this summer anyway...

imo

" I think those who call good people like members of the voluntary border patrols "yahoos" are snobs." Bill Kristol

"I think everybody sees the immigrant community as an emerging force.
I think everybody is quite sensitive that they don't want to be on the wrong side, politically, of this group."

You would think that Ted Kennedy or Hillary Clinton said this..but, no...this came from Republican Senator Sam Brownback of KS on Monday.

Noonan WAS great, but her recent stuff is crap. But for some reason, here she is making a lot of sense. I realllllly hope she keeps this up.

DC . Reports from the cali border are not good. The mexican media is touting amnesty. So the Bush / Fox amnesty promotion is a smashing succes.

The day may come when the not-yet-but-may-soon-be illegals are legal, and they want (now)their laws enforced.

This is classic Noonan. I think that this is her third good column in a row. I hope she has pulled out of her nosedive, she just about lost me as a fan.

"We lost 40 million + US citizens since Roe V Wade and all the kids the first wave of the American Holocaust... "

Good point. I have always figured that this immigration reform was a way to fill the gaps left in taxpapayers and Social Security taxpayers caused by Roe Vs Wade.

If Mexico reforms its own immigration policy we might consider letting them dictate about ours. Of course if they did reform their laws and let more immigrants in..they'd all end up here anyway!

This is a good point. Are we going to enforce our laws or allow our country to become a place little different than the place the immigrants left?

I think that is what I fear most about this illegal invasion....when I look over the border at what Mexico has become it’s terrifying to think the US could end up the same way.
