Newspapers have always been partisan, its the publics perception of what is acceptable that changes. The looming financial crisis at the Times reflects a shift in public opinion towards Conservatism leaving the Liberal NY Times in crisis.

Another issue is public opinion during times of war, which generally reflect negatively on anti-American views which normally go unchecked or refuted on a national level.

Why would Vanguard Group, the mutual fund company, be INCREASING it's holdings in NYT?

Who are the poor saps owning the mutual fund that supporting NTY?

If you own Vangard funds, best check to see that your fund doesn't own that dog.

"There are (and always will be) millions of people with time to kill on their daily commute. However, with the advent of MP3 blogs and music, there's no guarantee of a future for newspapers with commuters."

Thanks for posting this. It ties in with an observation my wife made yesterday. She only had to work a few hours yesterday with a long lunch hour. She and I went to lunch and ate outside to people watch and to enjoy our first sunny and warm day in weeks. Then we went shopping and after shopping spent a few more minutes people watching.

My wife is a superb observer, and she made the following comments:

1. Just a couple of years ago on a nice day like this a lot of people would be seen reading newspapers, magazines or books, or scanning ads for shopping for the upcoming long weekend. My wife noted that no one had any reading material. Most of the young people, 30 and under had IPods or were using their cell phones or both. A couple appeared to be on the internet with their portable computers using some type of wireless connections.

2. She wondered if reading anything from a printed page is now obsolete with the 30 and under generation.

If our observations are being replicated across the nation, anyone in the business of printing news and whatever for paid use, is in real trouble.

That's an interesting observation. I'll start watching for it.

Do you have a link re the increase in NYT shares by Vanguard? My source the MSM Money shows no real increase, but that data is only up to Dec 2005.

Folks with either of the Fido Equity Income funds might want to dump them, as they are on the increase re ownership of NYT.

The Fido Value Fund Fidelity Value Fund FDVLX is increasing its ownership of the loser NY Slimes. I dropped this once good fund at the end of March this year. It slipped to a 52% performance basis when compared to other funds in its class, which means 48% of the funds in its class are out performing it. I refuse to own any fund which isn't in the top 20%. At that time NYT didn't show up on the scope with this fund. The drop in performance happened since last year.

My wife had an interesting question yesterday, and I still have no answer.

When will the owners of the IPODs and portable PCs be able to receive the satellite FM without some big antenna. All of the young people who work in her office and in the office building around her have satellite FM in their radios. Some of the back office people who don't deal with the public directly or on a regular basis have little boom boxes which accomodate the FM satellite boxes.

Santa bought me an small FM satellite system for my fishing Bronco, and I haven't bothered to even plug it in and go on board to activate it yet. I will do it when our rivers go down, and there is somewhere I can drive to, to fly fish.

I've never posted a table before, I hope this works.

Note: It was the Vangard Institutional holdings that increased their share of NYT

Actually that is a better job than my browser will allow/do.

This appears to be from the MSN site.

Actually the Vanguard share is probably what the NY Slimes represents as one of the S&P 500. Notice that their shares have decreased as the value of the Slimes stocks go down.

T Rowe Price is one of the biggest mutual fund owners of NYT, and they have increased their share #s.

As I noted in my reply above, Fidelity Equity Income I & II have increased their sales. They get by with this bs as those funds are often one of their limited choices in 401k plans.

Is it stupid fund managers? That's the only other good option as to why a manager would buy NYT stock now.

I got that chart from MSN Money Central, which i use a lot. It isn't as fancy as some of the other stuff, but it holds the key for me to make good stock picks.

I saved that page on my computer. I want to see how things comparee when 3-31-06 is reported.

I use those pages all the time to eliminate buying a mutual fund which owns a lot of liberal stock on the case of the NYT, one stock, the NYT.

Let us know about the changes.

Funny isn't it when the newspapers blame every thing but the real cause for their decline.

You can not P!$$ on the values of 75% of traditional Americans and expect folks to keep reading.

I don't see any reason (technical or otherwise) why Ipods and laptops couldn't receive satellite FM signals. There must be a reason, though, or they'd be doing it by now.
