(CBS) CHICAGO - Chicago police say seven people had to be taken to local hospitals yesterday after drug dealers on the city's West Side began handing out free samples of the latest batch of heroin to hit the street.
About noon, paramedics responded to a call at an alley off West 21st Place, where three people were reportedly suffering overdoses or the effects of tainted dope.
Authorities scoured the neighborhood and found four more people unconscious in plain sight within a three-block area.
WBBM-TV in Chicago reports that it was surprising even in a neighborhood that has seen it all ambulances lined up to revive and transport people lying in the streets and alleyways unconscious and barely breathing.
All seven were treated with an anti-narcotic, shipped to nearby hospitals, and were reportedly in good condition.
In a few days, local residents said they expect people to flock to that same alley looking for that same batch of heroin, even though police are passing out fliers as warnings.
Police are not absolutely certain that the substance causing the overdoses was heroin, but they do know that drug dealers were passing out some variety of bad narcotics.
Anyone who said yes to the free offer was able to get a dose of a potentially lethal and deadly mix.
Prestina Singleton called 911 after her uncle collapsed on her floor.
"He took some of it; some of the free stuff, and he fell out," Singleton said. "(He) came in the house and he just fell out. We called the ambulance and they asked what was going on. He took some free heroin, fell out, (we) called the ambulance."
This is like a bad Cheech and Chong skit

More proof that you get what you pay for.
This seems like a poor business decision on the part of the drug dealers for a number of reasons.
Why bother treating them? Let social darwinism play out. The nitwits that OD need to die off in order to take them out of the gene pool. They wont reproduce and pass their defective intelligence on to a new generation. Taxpayers wont have to pay for revolving door medical treatment. Just a small cost for bagging the bodies and dumping them in a landfill. Same with meth users - let them consume all the meth they want until they drop dead. Problem solved. Plus if they're really stoned, they wont be robbing or assaulting decent people in order to get money for their next high.
Someone's vigilante anti-drug program?
Bad drugs don't cause an overdose, a miscut causes an overdose. What was handed out was likely too pure of a dose. Much more than a 14% pure shot of Heroin will cause an overdose requiring Narcan to wake up from.
Wonderful sentiment for the Easter season.
I am assuming 'fell out' means collapsed, poassed out or such.
curious what toxicology tests show. probably just a more pure or not properly cut batch.

Do you also favor "all you want" for marijuana?
I do hope you are a legislator that can introduce the bill!
passed

I can't imagine anyone "giving away" relatively pure heroine.
My guess is that it was cut with something even worse than heroine.
Like Astronaut - I ask why?
Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP).
These are retired and active cops, DEA agents, judges, prosecutors and other justice system employees, telling it from in the trenches of the WOD. They expose the WOD for what it is; a war against people.

These people aren't rocket scientists. Some idiot who was new to the trade probably miscut the smack and then destributed it for free to build a customer base.
My guess is that it was cut with something even worse than heroine.
If he did it would have been posioning, not an overdose. The smackheads would still be in the hospital.
The article fails to mention that the 7 were treated and walked away free as birds to go look for more dope. Unless I miss my guess they were even given cab fare at the emergency rooms.
Why do we jail drunks who pass out on the street and send dopers out free as birds/
Can you imagine the kind of plague that terrorists could start by handing out samples of "free heroin" that actually contains some highly contagious virus?

those folks are lucky they responded to treatment
Uh, if it was legalized it would have been much safer.

SARTAK, Afghanistan - Security forces backed by U.S.-led coalition helicopters attacked a suspected Taliban hideout in southeastern Afghanistan, sparking an intense battle that killed 41 rebels and six police, a senior official said Saturday.

Cheech and Chong? Oh for the love of Ford, it's a brave new world. Sounds like they need some soma.
Not me.
Same with those tobacco junkies.
Time to throw them in jail.

I have pondered the same line of thought. With the almost random and completely secretive nature of the illicit distribution of contraband - there would be almost no controlling it. (not a play on words but - ironic that the WOD uses the term "controlled substance")
I thought they already did that to members of the US Senate infected them with the stupid virus.

There are probably over 30 million persons in the U.S. who regularly use cannabis.
I don't think we have the jail space - and personally, I think it un-Constitutional to jail someone for a matter that is not presenting a threat to the rights of another citizen.
When you include the tobacco junkies to the marijuana smokers, its even more people to incarcerate. Still, its best for the children.
don't forget to also lock-up the high-cholesterol evildoers...for the children of course.
now that's real old school heroin dealing... knock a couple down and have every junky in town at your door step within 24hours.
Oh yeah, they're next. It's part of our Conservative approach to government.
Instead of delivering it in a more effective manner? No, I can't imagine it.
I guess that you don't have any relatives who are dopers. Then again, how would you know?
Me neither. I'd keep her.

(grin) Shows you how much I know about the stuff - I can't even spell it.
You are right - a pure heroine would be worth keeping!

Let's face it - no one has the answer to the (persons who choose to use mind altering substances) problem.
My best take on it is that - if - society would live up to it's most noble goals and ignore the persons - escaping - on mind altering substances - numerous of the wayward souls would choose to straighten out and chase those noble goals.
In the ultimate part of this equation - our Creator is going to have to step back into the picture and straighten us ALL out. No human government is capable of handling the imperfect nature of mankind.
End the WOD and use the money to pay for schools, elder care, roads and a million other more worthwhile purposes. Trust me - we would all be better off. Oh - God would still have to straighten us out. Speed the Kingdom of God!
Probably the same old ladies who hands out free samples of food at Walmart...struggling to make ends meet on slave labor wages.
Sounds to me like a stunt by a rival drug gang.
Give me a break. A parasite is a parasite, whether its Easter, Christmas, Kwanzaa or some Scientology holiday. I stand by my original post.
Well, I guess you get what you pay for is true no matter what the circumstances.
Actually, I do. The war on drugs has been an abject failure. We've wasted billions on it. Why should big government decide what substances people can ingest in the privacy of their homes? Beer is OK but weed isn't? Its called freedom. No one puts a gun to your head and tells you to snort or smoke meth. If you're dumb enough to do it, then live (and die) with the consequences. We need less government and more freedom. We also need to teach that actions have consequences and we have to live with the consequences of our choices.

"Hey Cloudy, hear about that new shipment that's hittin' the streets? I have a hunch that Frog has somethin' to do with it."
I always used to joke at family gatherings for the holidays - "Hey! Try some of my heroin bread. It's great stuff. Don't worry about how it tastes, just try a bite. First loaf's free."
I'm having a Häagen-Dazs right now (vanilla swiss almond). I feel so...wretched. Get it while it's still legal.
Okay Huxley.
