WASHINGTON (AP) -- Protection of marriage amendment? Check. Anti-flag burning legislation? Check. New abortion limits? Check.
Between now and the November elections, Republicans are penciling in plans to take action on social issues important to religious conservatives, the foundation of the GOP base, as they defend their congressional majority.
In a year where an unpopular war in Iraq has helped drive President Bush's approval ratings below 40 percent, core conservatives whose turnout in November is vital to the party want assurances that they are not being taken for granted.
"It seems like for only six months, every two years -- right around election time -- that we're even noticed," said Tom McClusky of the Family Research Council.
"Some of these better pass," he added. "You notice when it's just lip service being paid."
Former presidential candidate Gary Bauer agreed that the effort matters.
"If they get to these things this summer, which we expect that they will, that will go a long way toward energizing the values voters at the base of the Republican Party," said Bauer, head of Americans United to Preserve Marriage.
Pro-family promises 'not kept' GOP leaders long have known that the war and merely riding the coattails of a second-term president could disillusion their base.

Alright, the onslaught of demands from the many different "cores" of the GOP begins.
Not the least of which is the end of the income tax.
If Republicans want to remain in the majority and send their base a message that will be heard and echoed at the polls in November, now is the time to put an end to the income tax.
Since I just did my tax return yesterday I'd say the GOP has many "Core" issues they need to address before November.
And not the red ink to which the Republicans have become addicted either.
Be careful what you wish for; one year I told my teenage daughter and wife that anything in a long narrow box labeled "Browning" would be fine for me.
My daughter gave me a long narrow box that contained a letter opener engraved with the word, BROWNING.
From my experience, your tag line might be more accurate if rephased; I would suggest:
"Guns, what real men give their children for Christmas."

Cutting the size of Government? Overspending? New, huge entitlements? Engaging the Democraps?
Yes, while the Grumpy Old Party dawdles, they allow CNN to speak on their behalf.
This is nothing more than election year pandering in a year when "Republican" "policy" has spiraled downward into "damage control".
Call me cynical.
Whatever happened to Tort Reform, Rational Energy Policy, Social Security Reform, etc?
Yes sir, the borders may be wide open, the boomers' retirement is about to explode the federal budget, and Iran's got nukes, but as long as you can go to jail for burning an American flag, our future is safe.
RE Tort Reform and Energy Policy -- Well I don't know the answer.
But RE Social Security Reform, what happened is this -- The President took point, and lead the way. He was then attacked on every side, by libs of every stripe, with claims of everything from "stealing from old people" to "destroying FDR's legacy".
And republicans ran for cover, leaving the President exposed. The President alone, and unable to move forward, retreated.
That's What Happened, and so now the problem sits cooking until someone else dares to handle something that's hot.
Right. Immigration, the Problem that has No Solution. None. I honestly beleive that Jesus Christ Himself couldn't solve it, and if He tried, they'd crucify Him.
