WASHINGTON (AP) - The U.S. must aggressively pursue diplomacy with Iran about its disputed nuclear program, including direct talks, before considering a military option, lawmakers from both parties said Sunday.
"I think that would be useful,'' said GOP Sen. Richard Lugar, chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, when asked on ABC's "This Week'' about having direct talks.
"The Iranians are a part of the energy picture,'' Lugar said. "We need to talk about that.''
Sen. Christopher Dodd, D-Conn., agreed, saying the U.S. has ceded too much diplomacy to Europe.
"I happen to believe you need direct talks,'' Dodd said on "Fox News Sunday.'' "It doesn't mean you agree with them. It doesn't mean you support them. It doesn't mean you have formal diplomatic relations. But there's an option.''

I hope whomever is tasked with these 'talks' remembers he is talking to a man who held our diplomats hostage for nearly a year (I think, not sure of the length of time) - perhaps Jimmy Carter would like to represent us?
At least I seem to remember hearing that somewhere ;)
Oh!!!!!! You mean just like Lord Chamberlain did with A.H. at Munich to secure "Peace in Our Time!"????
So they get a quote from one "Republican"(Lugar) and a differing quote from another(Hunter) and yet the headline is what it is.. amazing.
Can there be a bigger waste of time??
What part of Bush will not negotiate with terrorists do they not understand? They would like to see Bush back down on that.
Problem with US dealing with Iraq = "unilateralism."
Problem with US dealing with Iran = "multilateralism."
Glad that's cleared up.
Now that Iran has proven to every sentient being that they aren't interested in negotiations, in come the treasonous swine on the Left to insist that, no, it's really the case that we need to get more "personal" with the lunatics in Iran.
Rather typical, isn't it, that when the fascists treat everyone like clowns liberals insist that being a clown is th *only* rational thing to do.
To the rescue. Again. The American Stalinist Left sides with the enemy.
UN Security Council.
Good one. What the hell is the point? I'd like the president or the Sec of State to explain why we should waste our time, especially when a 15-0 vote from the UN is apparantly worthless. They'll behave as if it were a 1-14 vote anyway. So why bother?
Hey, there's tons of bribe money to be made in Iran. Just look at the Oil for Food program in Iraq.
Thank you. I second your large, bold statement.
