Sounds like that hog got hit in the armor plate. They have a gristle patch over the ribs behind the shoulder. I have seen one take three rounds from a 30-30 at 75 yards and twitch. I finished him with a 7mm Mauser - through and through.

My favorite HP rifle round!
A very accurate and effective round - as it has been since about 1883!
The much newer 7-08 is probably not far behind it; I really don't know, personally.
