I have heard of threats (no, I have no proof) regarding pensions. Whether they could be pulled off is another story, but at the general/flag officer level that's a significant amount of money/privileges.

Almost as important, and more costly are the connections these guys had made with the manufacturers of weapons systems that Rummy shut down. Kill a system and you could cost a retiring general hundreds of thousands of dollars.
