Its funny how so many so called "conservatives" are really statists. I wonder how many so called "conservatives" would know that tariffs are mentioned in the constition, and the US govrenmnet used to use tariffs to raise revenues rather than income taxes.

Actually, perhaps they just believe in the American project of self-government like our founders.

A self-governing society, which America is supposed to be, requires a defined set of individuals (citizens) who live in a definable geographic area (nation). It also requires reasonably independent and self-reliant citizens who have achieved a consensus on the general political philosophy of government (the constitution) and who see themselves connected to and invested in this project both in the present and for their future progeny. In other words, it requires “a people“ who see themselves as having common interests and who recognize that common citizenship in a self governing republic entails accepting that we all have obligations to our fellow citizens. One of these obligations is to maintain sufficient economic opportunity in this society to allow citizens to become reasonably self-reliant so that they do not become dependent on government.

The political and corporate elites of both parties are well along the way to eliminating the need for citizens and self-government altogether. The corporate elites truly have no allegiance to any nation or to any system of government other than that which benefits themselves directly at any given moment. They are not interested in whether your or my grandchildren live in a self-governing society that values all types of liberty. They have removed themselves from the commonweal and therefore cannot be citizens of any one country in the Aristotelian sense. Proponents of globalism are really opponents of self-government of any one nation which requires borders and a citizenry that see its future and well being connected to a definable people and place.

A self-governing society of citizens needs the nation state and borders in order to function. A globalized world organized to promote international trade and markets does not need self-governing citizens or nations, only passive consumers and docile taxpayers. It is no accident that the only thing we citizens were asked to do after 9-11 by our President was to go shopping!
