Ex-Derby mayor seeks GOP nod to challenge Lieberman
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | April 18, 2006 | Paul Hughes

HARTFORD -- A former mayor of the state's smallest city is thinking big and aiming high.

Alan Schlesinger, a former two-term mayor of Derby and six-term state representative, announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination for the U.S. Senate on Monday.

Schlesinger is running for the seat Democrat Joseph I. Lieberman has held for 18 years. He is not the only Republican interested in the party's nomination.

Schlesinger's announcement Monday coincided with the filing deadline for federal income taxes in Connecticut.

"What better day to announce than on 'Tax Day' because I am really concerned our hard-earned tax dollars are being frittered away by our legislators in Washington," Schlesinger said.

The Senate race has a more crowded field than might have been expected a year ago.

The usually popular Lieberman is facing a challenge for his party's nomination from Greenwich businessman Ned Lamont. If Lamont should win, Lieberman is prepared to run as an independent.

Paul Streitz, an advocate for immigration control, is also running for the Republican nomination. A marketing researcher from Darien, Streitz made some news and became a figure of some controversy as a co-founder of Connecticut Citizens for Immigration Control. He announced his candidacy in March.

Other Republicans are also considering a run for the GOP nomination, but none have made anything official.

Schlesinger said he has the endorsement of more than two dozen state legislators, including Senate Minority Leader Louis C. DeLuca, R-Woodbury, and Reps. Alfred C. Adinolfi, R-Cheshire; David K. Labriola, R-Naugatuck and Sean J. Williams, R-Watertown

Republican Gov. M. Jodi Rell said on Monday she was not prepared to endorse any candidate from her party at this time.

Like Schlesinger, Streitz also wants to set a timetable for withdrawing U.S. forces in Iraq.

Additionally, Streitz wants to put U.S. troops on the Mexican border, stricter and wider enforcement of immigration laws, arresting employers of illegal aliens, a seven-year moratorium on legal immigration and no amnesty for illegal aliens. He also favors rescinding visas for foreign workers and sending them home.

Streitz also proposes to end all free trade agreements and erect protective tariffs.

From 1994-98, Schlesinger was mayor of Derby, which bills itself as the state's smallest city. Before that he served as a state representative from 1981-93 and a selectman in Orange from 1979-81.

Lieberman is the one Democratic Senator I don't mind seeing re-elected.

If there is a Democrat that should not be voted out of office, it is St. Joe.

Joe Lieberman is in far greater danger from his left, than any threat that will be mounted by Republicans. The Dem'crats of Connecticut will undercut and defund Lieberman in any way they can, without, of course, REALLY meaning to surrender the seat up to Republicans. Their objective will be to make the renomination for the seat so disagreeable a task, that the Senator may seek to retire, rather than battle his own party.

He says he will run as an independant if he is not the dimwitocrat nominee.

I'd prefer the Lieberman I know, to a New England republican I don't know.

Lieberman is liberal on everything but the war.

Don't get me wrong, I'd much rather him then most other D's, and given that there are SO few sane D's in the Senate, I don't mind him so much, but don't mistake him for anything resembling a conservative. He voted against the PBA ban for God's sake.

Ben Nelson is the only Democrat in the Senate that you could actually fairly characterize as moderate in the sense that he votes about equally with both parties, he actually votes slightly more with the R's according to the ACU.

Here's a question you need to ask yourselves.

When the vote is taken to organize the senate, who will Leiberman vote for? Answer: The democrat Reed.

The party that controls the Senate controls the agenda. If you don't like what's coming out of the Senate now, thanks to the ineffectual cowardly lion Frist, wait til the socialist crats get ahold of power. They are idealogs and will wield power aggressively.

If you think the likes of Fat Kennedy, Crusty Clinton, Dodd, Boxer, Fineswine, Schmucky Schumer have too much influence now, wait til the crats regain power.

The problem now is that Mr. Eunuch Frist has no idea how to enforce party discipline and that lets marginal Republicans like Snow, Specter, McLame run roughshod over him. Hopefully next year, if the Republicans retain the Senate, they'll have a real leader to keep the mavericks in line.

Looking at the big picture in this case, I'll have to take anyone with an R after their name at this time.

A few reminders about the self-styled "Conscience of the Senate"

EXHIBIT ONE: LIEberman's biggest scam was getting into the Senate on the backs of the unborn. This craven individual, Lieberman, ruthlessly used the unborn to get into office. As a 1988 Senate candidate, Lieberman made many, many pro-life pledges to Connecticut Catholic leaders as Atty General running for pro-abort Sen Weicker's seat. Based on a Lieberman poll indicating pro-life votes were there for the taking, Lieberman courted Catholics, and made pro-life promises that he had no intention of keeping. Lieberman got into the Senate----with pro-life votes. Once in office, Lieberman turned tail and became an unwavering abortion rights supporter, voting consistently pro-abortion, and even voting to uphold partial-birth abortion on six separate occasions. The Ntl Right to Life Committee has meeting notes of candidate Lieberman's calculated, phony pro-life pledges.

EXHIBIT TWO: Lieberman and ex-Reagan Edu Secy Bill Bennett would give out "Silver Sewer Awards" to express opposition to Hollywood's salacious, sexually explicit and violent music, TV and movie output. Then when Lieberman became Gore's running mate, he went to Hollywood on bended knee, in obeisance to the moguls, promising to strengthen Hollywood's ultra-liberal control over America, in exchange for votes and campaign financing.

EXHIBIT THREE: Lieberman's a dedicated gun-grabber - as his voting record clearly shows.

EXHIBIT FOUR: Lieberman famously went on and on during impeachment hearings about Bill Clinton's sexual conduct, but refused to cast his vote against Clinton when it counted.

EXHIBIT FIVE: Lawmakers With Relatives on Payroll By The Associated Press Wednesday, April 13, 2005 ----Connecticut Democratic Sen. Joe Lieberman: Son Matthew received about $34,000 and daughter Rebecca about $36,000 for working on the senator's 2004 presidential campaign.

EXHIBIT SIX: LIEberman was so "supportive" of the US military that he was willing to become vice-president by NOT counting Florida's military vote. The man is not fit to have anything to do with the US military.

I like you Liz. We think alike. I love the way you keep shooting down these mythical democrat and moderate Rebublican heros (like that liberal Rudy Guilanni) that the uninformed on Free Republic hold in such high regard.

Even though you are attacked when you present the truth you still hold your ground. And old saying is "That the man most hated in the village is the man that tells the truth".

Keep the faith and keep trying to educate.

Best regards. Mike.

Of course, you're both right.

However, in the war on terror, Bush has had few allies in the Senate as consistantly strong as Lieberman.

Lieberman is the closest thing we have right now to a Zell Miller.

If I new that there was a true conservative running. And that Lieberman was going to run as an independant, than I would support the conservative.

However, too many (R's) from New England are Rino's. And the last thing we need is another Rino in the Senate.

(Blush), it's nothing really.

I am merely passing on to Rudy and Joe a very valuable lesson:

"Be careful who you step on, on the way up, because you're going to meet them on the way down."
