One of the victims, Elliott, was convicted of having consentual sex with a girl less than a month away from the age of consent. He was 19 at the time. He was hardly a predator type. That is the problem with the registry in Maine, there is no way to differentiate between the real predators and those who, like Elliott, used poor judgment. There is no suggestion that he was considered an ongoing threat.

Common sense died when political correctness came into vogue. Can't have some sex offenders "profiled" as being worse now, can we????

Good point.

We've a new criminal name: "Sex Offender" and we hear, like on this thread, all sex offenders should be killed, when the label applies to flashers, people like Elliot and serial child-rapist murderers.

We should go back to the older method and label the criminal with the actual crime.

I agree! That’s why this registry needs to be abolished! The real predators/ rapists should never be released from prison. And that Monster, Marshall , what a coward!! He knew he would never see the light of day if he were caught. In contrast, The non-violent offenders, that hadn’t, in any way, committed a crime that involved a child, deserve the chance of redemption after they’ve already served their time. And definitely not deserving of a death sentence, as the tragic loss of William Elliott along with the other registrant. Unlike these sensational cases which caused public outrage, resulting in this evil registry, are extremely rare, i.e, as that of the stranger who raped and murdered Megan Kanka.
No comparison to that of William Elliott who had a consensual sexual relationship with a teenager, only 2 weeks shy of the age of consent. Was he capable of a heinous crime? Or the boy who needed to take a leek behind a tree when his bladder was full? I think not!
