Immigration officials made a surprise visit to a northeast Houston business this morning and questioned about two dozen workers in what may be only one of several immigration raids in the city today. A U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement bus was parked in front of IFCO Systems on North McCarty Drive where several officials had gathered the workers. The company makes and repairs pallets, wooden structures used in shipping.
A woman stopped by to check on relatives who work at the company, including a cousin. "He doesn't have papers. They say he'll be deported back to El Salvador,'' said Ana Perez, who came by with her son, Carlos. ``I feel sad about this. Hopefully, he'll find another opportunity.'' Her cousin, Marvin Morelos, had worked six months for the company. She had not heard anything about her other relatives. Steve Hoard, a temporary driver for the company, had parked a company trailer by the side of the road, waiting to be let in. He said he was surprised the nationwide company would hire undocumented workers.
"When you see so many (Hispanics), you kind of figure it,'' he said. ``I figured with the hiring process, they probably screened them.'' Many of the workers take their morning coffee at a cafe next to M&M Pawn near the business, which Daniel Esquivel has run for six years. "I say this is repression of a people,'' he said. ``They are good workers.'' Lucia Andino's husband is documented, but a boy who has been living with them and has worked for the company for 1½ years is not. "This is an injustice, what they are doing. Imagine the conditions in which they are working here,'' she said, pointing to a stack of pallets next to the warehouse. ``Why don't they look for real criminals? An American would never repair a pallet for 25 cents. They would rather be unemployed.''
BINGO!
Maybe a Houston Freeper used my tagline.
Nawww......nevermind.

No doubt about it.

Immigration officials round up undocumented workers

(4/19/06 - KTRK/HOUSTON) - An immigration raid is underway at two Houston area businesses.
One business involved is IFCO Systems on McCarty Drive. A bus from the Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement is on the scene. Officials are processing and loading undocumented workers on the bus individually.
The second location is believed to be on Flintrock Road. Officials have not said how many workers are being taken into custody.
Louisa Aquini with BICE says today's bust is part of a larger crackdown on worksites that hire undocumented workers.
It's unclear at this time if any arrests have been made.

Personal Comments:
This is a backlash to the marches we saw here in Houston.
In addition to sending these illegals back to Mexico, I want to see the employers arrested for busing in these illegals. Now, THAT would make a difference.
I am all in favor of detaining and deporting illegals. But to really fix this problem, our government MUST go after the real source of the problem. We have thousands of businesses who are breaking our laws, abusing illegal workers, and gutting the legal workforce of this country. These businesses are the worst of the worst: opportunists who put their greed above the welfare of others and the welfare of our Country. It is strictly illegal, and they are thumbing their nose at our laws.
True, businesses will have to pay more for LEGAL workers. Isn't that what our system is built on: the law of supply and demand?
But our system has gotten out of wack because there has been an unlimited supply of CHEAP labor.
Go I-C-E. Do your job. We citizens are counting on you to stop the flow of illegals into the U.S.
They had enough evidence that a judge allowed them to do it.
Lucia Andino separates herself from Americans and gives her true feelings away. She says Americans won't do the work for 25 cents. I guess she doesn't consider herself American. That's ok, we don't, either.
They ought to line up the buses in front of the Houston Chronicle and frog-march the printers and carriers into the deportation line. No doubt the Chronicle is a huge supplier of "entry level" positions for illegals.
How the hell did this travesty happen?! How did these agents not get a copy of the GOP talking points. Don't they know that we can't deport illegals because it's just too many of them. The nerve! Bush/Vicente better get these guys back on the team before Americans catch on to the great GOP lie.
during the Reagan admin - a friend who owned a Mexican restaurant, was raided on more than one occasion and paid a very large fine for having workers without green cards. Guess what happened with Bush 1 and Klinton? No enforcement replaced following the rules.
Well I will believe they are serious when I see 10 hits everyday in the same cities, day after day after day.
They should have been doing this for the last 20 yrs.
Good point.
" An American would never repair a pallet for 25 cents. They would rather be unemployed."
Thats funny, I took a job doing exactly that when I was laid off of my regular job once( about 40 yrs ago.)
Just think, Ana, if you all had come to this country legally (I did), then you would never have to be inconvenienced...
You want sympathy? Buy a dog.
She says Americans won't do the work for 25 cents

If that worker is being paid 25 cents, (which I doubt), just wait till they (illegal aliens) claim WE used THEM and demand reparations.
It's only a matter of time.
