Minutemen to Bush: Build Fence or We Will
Associated Press ^ | ARTHUR H. ROTSTEIN

Posted on 04/20/2006 6:12:54 AM PDT by 300magnum

TUCSON, Ariz. - Minuteman border watch leader Chris Simcox has a message for President Bush: Build new security fencing along the border with Mexico or private citizens will.

Simcox said Wednesday that he's sending an ultimatum to the president, through the media, of course — "You can't get through to the president any other way" — to deploy military reserves and the National Guard to the Arizona border by May 25.

Or, Simcox said, by the Memorial Day weekend Minuteman Civil Defense Corps volunteers and supporters will break ground to start erecting fencing privately.

"We have had landowners approach," Simcox said in an interview. "We've been working on this idea for a while. We're going to show the federal government how easy it is to build these security fences, how inexpensively they can be built when built by private people and free enterprise."

Simcox said a half-dozen landowners along the Arizona-Mexico border have said they will allow fencing to be placed on their borderlands, and others in California, Texas and New Mexico have agreed to do so as well.

"Certainly, as with everything else, we're only able to cover a small portion of the border," Simcox said. "The state and federal government have bought up most of the land around the border. I suspect that's why we'll never get control of the border."

But he said the plan is to put up secure fencing that truly will be an effective deterrent, and to show how easily it can be accomplished.

Simcox gave this description of the envisioned barrier-and-fencing complex:

Start with a 6-foot deep trench so a vehicle can't crash through; behind it, roll of concertina (coiled, razor-edged barbed wire), in front of a 15-foot high heavy-gauge steel mesh fence angled outward at the top.

Behind the fence will be a 60- to 70-foot wide unpaved but graded dirt road, along with inexpensive, mounted video cameras that can be monitored from home computers. On the other side of the road will be a second, 15-foot fence, with more concertina wire on its outside.

"It's a very simple, effective design based on feedback we've had from Border Patrol and the military," Simcox said. "It's a fence that can be built on the cheap, effective and secure."

Simcox said supporters will try to build the fencing with volunteer labor. Surveyors and contractors have offered to help with the design and survey work, he said, and some have said they will provide heavy equipment.

Simcox said those involved in the planning hope to keep costs to between $125 and $150 a foot.

Access to land literally on the border is an issue because so much is state-leased trust property or federally owned, he said.

"You may have to deal with a situation where private property owners erect their own fences and may be faced with the president sending the National Guard to prevent them from protecting their private property," Simcox said.

He said the Minuteman plan is "to keep turning up the heat" until President Bush has to respond somehow.

Simcox said. "The state and federal government have bought up most of the land around the border.

Earth to Simcox...federal, state and local goverments own most of the land in the western states and a good chunk of it in the eastern states as well. If government were seen as an industry, it would be the industry with the greatest number of employees by far -- and hundreds of thousands, if not millions of those employees carry guns to keep us citizens under control.

Of course you are right, but in the mean time the local level enforcement will send the proper message to shape up or we will ship you out.

The Republican politicians need to remember they are there to do the will of the people who elected them. They do a decent job on a number of issues as has President Bush and they don't need to take a pol on every issue that comes down the pike, but they should know their constituents because they should be of the same mind.

For example, Lindsey Graham gets elected on conservative principles and probably follows through in voting properly the majority of the time (properly being the will of his constituents). The issue of illegal immigration comes up and he basically tells his constituents "Be quiet, I know more about this than you and believe me my position is for your own benefit."

The problem is that whether he is right or wrong he is there to represent the people of South Carolina and their desires. If his office is slammed with calls and letters flow from his people to stop the illegal immigration and no to amnesty and if they already have rejected his arguments to persuade them then his obligation is to vote No to amnesty and Yes to the fence and enforcement.

I guess what I am clumsily trying to say is that many Republican office holder do right on many issues they just forget that they are representing a group of people. A Rino whos constituents are Rinos must do Rino things, but a "conservative" whos constituents are conservative needs to vote accordingly whether he agrees on that one issue or not.

I would hate to see Dems take over in areas where the Pubs have forgotten who they represent when on a number of issues they do right.

This is a brilliant idea.

Take the thing into private hands and just start doing it.

That will flush government officials out and force them to openly act AGAINST fencing, by pulling out regulations, etc. And taking a specific act to BLOCK fencing will be a lot more politically painful for those who do it than the current politicians' game of status quo.

I support this.
And once I've checked out to see that it's really happening and contributions are actually going to these folks and they're really doing it, I'll contribute.

Good job on their part.
And thank you for posting this.

The so called "Minute Men" have become an embarrassment to America and a disgrace to the name they have stolen.

Wouldn't want you beside me when the chips are down. Our nation is not only flooded with illegals and their sympathizers but also enablers, like you.

You must be a real piece of work, someone that everyone pushes around and tramples over. No sign of backbone, pride in country or own identity..........unless of course you're one of the illegals that the rest of us are trying to keep out, which would explain your attitude.

I sympathize with those trying to make a better life, however, you are full of it (in a polite way).

It is an Invasion, no doubt, because they are coming by the millions.

My question is just who is it that is coming in?

Are they vaccinated? No.

Are they willing to work for lower wages with no benefits to replace the American worker who is in process of pay his taxes and raising his family at the current standard of living? Yes.

Just how many are of Islamic terrorist affiliation? Who knows?

How many are educated at all? Who knows.

How many are serious criminals? Who knows.

So, with a respectful manner, anyone with your naive disposition are more than willing to pay for the flood of illegals, cause I do not want to and should not have to.

You should see at exactly what France, Germany, and Great Britain have done recently to curb the flow. Those European economies are suffering because of 10%-30% unemployment. Remember the recent wave of violent demonstrations in France?

You'd best better WAKE UP!!

Wall Fund - I'll send them some cash.

I'll also prepare a form letter to send to all other worthy charities and causes. This letter will state that I am only donating money to protect Americans First.

This applies especially to the morons running for congress who refuse to do their job.

Yup, but it will get built and there'll probably be a few 'nice surprises' here and there for those trying to get over the fence. I think we should send a little money, bottled water, beer, and ribs for the end of the day.

Fourth Generation New Mexican landowner, my family Homesteaded here before it was a State. Tenth or eleventh Generation American.

Some of my ancestors were living in what is now America before there was an America. Others came later, my namesake sold his ship in what is now South Carolina in about 1750 and headed West.

We welcome all except racists and bigots.

Your comparison of the Illegal Aliens to "Foreign Invaders" is ridiculous and disgusting. They just want a better life for themselves and their families. That is exactly the same type of people who have created the America that we know today.""

SOOOOO- "A better life" includes:

Driving a car here in the USA and not having a car in Mexico??? So where are they "learning to drive a car??
Having no proper driver's license here and never needing one in Mexico???
Not being able to read the road signs here and causing traffic problems they never caused in Mexico???
Clogging our schools with students who cannot read nor write in English, effectively preventing YOUR CHILD from getting a proper American education because progress in the classroom all grinds to a halt with "students" who don't have schools to attend in Mexico???
Getting free medical care in our hospitals and delivery rooms when they barely got bandaids in Mexico??? When you get hurt and no longer have a trauma room to go to, remember that I wrote this. If you don't know how many hospitals and emergency trauma rooms have closed in the Los Angeles area, educate yourselves. The media doesn't want to talk about it, and the politicos don't want to admit how bad the problem is.
Operating Meth labs to "make a living" here in the USA which is easier than making it in Mexico and trying to sneak it across the border past the sniffer dogs??? Such meth labs are polluting our streams and rivers more than our industry, and they are becoming a danger to vacationers trying to use our park and forest lands. There are places where hiking and riding no longer occur because of being shot at. I have lost trails due to this. The cops cannot find them in the forests. Too easy to hide.
Joining gangs and creating an untold burden on the judicial system nationwide which was never solved when they were criminals in Mexico??? Even the ones not in gangs are a criminal problem.
Bringing the wonderful "cultural art" called graffitti to the USA and a building/wall/truck/railroad car near you when they wouldn't deface their hometown in Mexico the same way???
Taking jobs that your kids and grandkids are never going to be able to take- construction, etc- and being unable to read instructions, labels, etc and doing shoddy work on a house/building that you are expected to buy????? They live in shacks in Mexico, so they don't KNOW HOW to build a damn thing. NOt all American kids are going to go to college and become CEO's. Our kids need vocational apprenticeships that are being taken by illegal intruders.
Working in the agricultural industry and because they are unable to read ENGLISH labels, putting the wrong product on a field being prepared for WATERMELONS instead of cotton, causing poison deaths years ago near Bakersfield because the watermelons became the cause of death and severe sickness. The sacks of pesticide even had skull and crossbones on them, and the illegal workers still put on the wrong stuff when preparing the field. The entire watermelon sales hit the skids that year and other farmers who grew them correctly were on the brink of bankruptcy.
Now almost every pesticide- along with toooooo many other products is labeled in both English and SPANISH. This is an assumption that the uneducated fool can read in ANY language.
Letting illegal intruders VOTE in a country where they have to RIGHT to vote, and don't understand what they are voting for, when they most likely never voted in MEXICO????

I have some news for alot of you people who live somewhere other than So Cal. There actually were houses in the 60's and 70's that DID NOT have every window covered with bars, and the "security" industry hardly existed for a residential application. It just wasn't a problem then.
Now, you have to have both, and still they steal you blind.
I can remember when you were supposed to keep your vehicle registration either on your visor or on your steering column in California. They got that changed when it became evident that illegal intruders working as "valets" parking cars in toney restaurants and at the "opera" etc, were part of gangs that did burglaries while you were out dining or enjoying your favorite tenor.
All insured Americans in every category are paying thru the nose for insurance because of the intrusion of illegal intruders?? Is there even insurance in Mexico? Or is it just called extortion? I pay over 30% of my current auto premium for "uninsured motorists" and in 1993 I paid less than 1/2 of ONE PERCENT for the same coverage. Tell me that isn't because of the illegal intruders. Look at your own insurance and prove me wrong. I have the documents. I will share the info.
Those of us who have lived it up close and personal are not paranoid. We know what we have seen and experienced. Do NOT pander to US that these intruders are "only looking for a better life". I have worked fair and square for myself to have "a better life" and now I am not nearly safe enough in my own country. Explain to me the fairness in this situation. Use small words- I am not real bright, I guess, by your standards.

The problem is IMBEDDED deeper than you realize.
They DO NOT want to assimilate into out culture. They want to take back a large portion of this country.
Wake Up America.

Well they may want a better life but when we (hopefully all hypothetical) grant amnesty then what? more will come over and more and more the tide will not stem. What, do you think the Economy is some fairy tale candy land with purple gum drops and money grows on trees where everyone can bask in rich oceans of caramel cream? It will not sustain the coming onslaught. You would destroy America or at least balkanize it for the happiness of a few? And after they are dead and gone? You my friend first compare this wall to the Berlin wall and then say this is not an Invasion? You need to read some history.

If each donor buys a foot of wall, that will require 5.2 million US citizens to donate $150 each. Probably feasible, but it's gonna take a lot of work.""

I suspect that alot more than 5.2 million American will pay to keep more than 20 million intruders out.

Using your math, if 20 million Americans donate about $40 each, this wall could be built.
I also suspect that there are alot of people who would put their vacation time and some of their retriement time and skills to work on the wall project.
In fact, IF the minutemen make a survey on the topic, I suspect they will get overwhelmed with volunteers.
I sure as hell cannot build a wall, but I can send an amount of money that is under $200, and I can send more for groceries to feed these people while they are working.
