WASHINGTON - In a rare occurrence, the CIA fired an officer who acknowledged giving classified information to a reporter, NBC News learned Friday.

The officer flunked a polygraph exam before being fired on Thursday and is now under investigation by the Justice Department, NBC has learned.

Intelligence sources tell NBC News the accused officer, Mary McCarthy, worked in the CIA's inspector general's office and had worked for the National Security Council under the Clinton and and George W. Bush administrations.

The leak pertained to stories on the CIA’s rumored secret prisons in Eastern Europe, sources told NBC. The information was allegedly provided to Dana Priest of the Washington Post, who wrote about CIA prisons in November and was awarded a Pulitzer Prize on Monday for her reporting.

Sources said the CIA believes McCarthy had more than a dozen unauthorized contacts with Priest. Information about subjects other than the prisons may have been leaked as well.

The sources spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the firing.

Simple:

You've caught a leaker and you charge him/her and throw them in jail.

MSM:

Libby, Rove GWB (leaker in chief) Cheney (shall we wake him up to remind him.)

Come on this is friggin obvious.

The press might try to spin it that way, but if the administration comes out hard and has the goods on this woman leaking classified secrets that have harmed our war effort, I don't see the left winning this one. It will take playing offense though, a position that seems foreign to them up until now....

My thoughts too.

Not exactly my idea of the agent we want to parachute behind enemy lines to hook up with Bond, James Bond. [Insert 007 theme music]

Unless....that's a disguise, In which case, hats off.

Let the MSM try to set up that story. Let them get out on a limb with that one, then knock it out from under them by proving that Rove, Libby, and Cheney never discussed classified material with anyone except for the one case when Libby was specifically authorized by Bush to discuss pre-war intelligence. IIRC, that intelligence was completely declassified a week later. False MSM stories will only stand up for so long under cross-examination by the Blogosphere. Remember the apparently forged Bush national guard "documents."

Cheney was authorized by the President to have certain information revealed. That's not "leaking" classified information ~ remember, the President can restrict, relax restrictions, or declassify information.

The Vice President also has certain prerogatives in that regard.

CIA personnel are not authorized to do so outside of established procedures.

Yeah, the CIA needs to stop hiring those Ivy League twits who think a CIA job is primarily an opportunity for enjoyable international travel. We need more serious ex-military men like Johnny Spann.

Far too rare if you ask me.

I knew it had to be a RAT. I bet there are a lot of other RATS in the CIA (and FBI) that can't be trusted.
