I suspect that if you cancelled all of the homeless programs, the total money saved in one year would buy each homeless person a home.

That's a shame about all the welfare programs like that for adults. Really shameful.

But the kids should not have to suffer for it. In my kids' middle class school, it is a stigma to be on the free lunch program. So what the school did was have a give away table. Anything any kid didn't want was put on that table instead of being thrown away. And all kids were encouraged to take what they wanted. I was embarrassed when my son told me he regularly ate stuff from that table, but as I look back, maybe that was what was expected.

I think it's true, kids learn to go on welfare from their parents. Maybe it's time we started thinking of ways to stop that vicious circle. Like that 'give away' table in the cafeteria where anyone could find extra stuff they like.
