Based on your description of the approach, I would infer that the pilot is ex-Navy.
I can relate to your story in a small way. I was on a Delta flight that had a medical emergency that required a fast descent and landing at Atlanta-Hartsfield. We were in an MD-88 (which the pilot later described as the Porsche of airliners). We were coming into Altanta from the west, but had to land to the west due to wind conditions. (meaning the pilot had to make a 180 degree turn to land the plane. Since you are not a pilot, I won't use the technical terms ... but essentially we flew by the airport, just south of the runway; and then in one motion made a sharp, descending left turn that pinned us in our seats/then floated our stomachs. When it was all over I spoke with the pilot -- he was a retired A-6 Intruder (Navy attack aircraft) pilot.
As far as your episode goes ... wow. Thanks for the eyewitness report.
Never again. Never again will some nutcase take an American passenger aircraft.

I can relate to your story in a small way.Not my story. I'm just the vehicle by which it got posted here. It was whoever "Starwood Nut" is that wrote it.
I just wanted to clarify that.

Any USAF pilot can fly a fighter break, it's not just the squids. (;-)
