Iran's nuclear programme is the most serious threat faced by Jews since the Nazi holocaust, Israel's defence minister has said.

Shaul Mofaz said: "Of all the threats we face, Iran is the biggest. The world must not wait. It must do everything necessary on a diplomatic level in order to stop its nuclear activity."

He added: "Since Hitler we have not faced such a threat."

Iran insists that its nuclear programme is aimed solely at producing energy, and that it has no ambitions to acquire an atomic arsenal.

But calls by Iran's president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, for Israel to be "wiped from the map" have increased tensions between the two countries.

Israel has so far endorsed American efforts to curb Iran's nuclear programme through possible sanctions.

But earlier today Mr Ahmadinejad said he did not think the US would go through with its threats.

"I think it is very unlikely for them to be so stupid to do that," he said. "I think even the two or three countries who oppose us are wise enough not to resort to such a big mistake."

Mr Mofaz said: "Pressure must be applied on the Iranians to ensure that they realise there is no returning from the path they are taking."

Shaul Mofaz is likely to surrender the Defence Ministry to the more moderate Labour Party chief Amir Peretz in the next Israeli coalition government.

I've been saying for the past few months now that I feel like this is what it must have felt like by my grandparents and parents by in the 1930's watching Hitler as he began his rise to power. Stirring feelings of nationalism, pride, superiority, and unabashed hatred for the Jews, blaming them for all the ills of his nation. Beating the war drums loudly and threatening any nation that speaks against him.

I guess, I'm not the only one that's thinking along these lines.

Once it is determined that Iran is near a workable and deliverable nuclear weapon Israel will have no choice. They will not destroy Iran, but they will destroy its leadership and nuclear weapons program. However, I do not think Israel has the capability to do this with conventional arms. They do have this capability with their nuclear bunker busters. They might even consider a preemptive conventional strike against the leadership and hope for an internal revolution. Failing that, I suspect Israel would go nuclear on Iran. They would have no choice. Otherwise, Israel would suffer a nuclear strike on it soil. Even so, Israel has nukes that are at sea. The nation that strikes Israel with a nuke will be destroyed.

I am in total agreement. Israel has already prepared for this scenario. We here in the states dissect their abilities to provide enough firepower and/or intelligence to rock back Iran's nuclear capacity. There is no; 'We cannot do it, it is not possible!' in Israel. It is only a matter of timing, weather, and precision, never mind any question as to these people's loyalties. They do not exist to this day by chance.

Given the rather poor history of aerial bombardment in achieving the capitulation of a civilian populace, I'd say your hope is rather unlikely. The mullahs would use an Israeli strike as an excuse for a political crackdown. Any Iranians that were wavering will likely support the mullahs after the bombs begin to fall.

Second, I am beginning to have my suspicions about the "Iranian Opposition". I think that the opposition is not nearly so strong, and the mullahs are using their mere existence to forestall western military action.

It is. And it has. They are still claiming that they are not making weapons. They could not hide the construction of their nuclear facilities from Spy Satellites. Therefore they were forced to admit the nuclear energy program. That energy program is what is out in the open. When they have a functional bomb, their rhetoric may change from, 'we have the right to peaceful nuclear power' to, 'we have the right to defend our nation with nuclear weapons'. History would tell us however that the rhetoric change may come only after the detonation of a nuke somewhere in Israel or near Baghdad.

If you are however referring to the Mullahs making noise, you do have a point. Why would they make such noise if they were making nuclear weapons. Well, they may fear that the US working with UN resolutions will be able to stop Iran in a fashion similar to how the US stopped Saddam. Therefore they decided to not even give the UN a chance or peace for that matter. Those that say that we should have left Saddam in power must realize that both Iran and Iraq would be in a WMD arms race right now.
