"South Korea vehemently opposes Japan's survey plans and this month dispatched 20 gunboats to the area, warning of a possible physical confrontation if Japan proceeded."
Remenants of WW2 still exist to this day.
I also recall hearing about Japan and Russia still fighting over some of the Sakhlin islands and Kuril islands... there was a brief exchange of gun fire in the 80's if im not mistaken... and the shoot down of a commercial airliner over the island.
Two pacifist states are on the verge of war and there isn't a white guy in sight to blame. What is the world coming too?
This is the current leftist leadership of Korea looking for an excuse to sidle up with the Chinese.
You may be thinking of Korean Airlines flight 007, shot out of the sky on September 1, 1983, with the loss of all 269 passengers aboard, including one US conhressman. The flight was fired on by Russian fighter planes and brought down ostensibly for straying into Soviet air space. The Soviets put it about that the plane was spying on secret bases, or some such nonsense, as a private contractor for the CIA. At all events, the excuse was bogus, and the whole episode is still widely considered yet another example of Soviet mass murder. It did not, however, have anything to do with Sakhalin, or even Japan.
The Japanese have Godzilla. What have you got, Roh?

Sakhalin island is not. Japan is not pretending on it. They pretend of 4 Kurill islands. But Russia agrees to give thme only 2.

Accually plane overpassed right above Petropavlovsk-Kamchatskii the soviet navy base. It was night time and pilots from interceptors has no eye contact with plane. So air-defense command thought that it was RC-135 spy plane.
They dicided not let it away.
The pilot of the fighter that shot down KAL 007, Lt. Col. Gennadiy Nikolayevich Osipovich, at first contended that he did not know KAL 007 was a civilian airliner, claiming "We do not study civilian aircraft belonging to foreign companies. I knew all the military aircraft, all the reconnaissance aircraft .... But this was not like any of them."
On April 28, 1991, however, South Korean television reported that Osipovich had finally admitted that he knew he was firing missiles at a commercial plane.
Meanwhile, the Junior Kim in North Korea must be yukking it up about this little devlopment...but we won't talk abt that, will we Roh?
