IT happened last Wednesday, and it was nicely timed.
One week later - about now, in fact - the U.S. Senate was scheduled to reconvene to discuss an immigration bill. The bill proposes to amnesty most of the 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S. and to admit millions more legally as guest-workers. The controversial measure is strongly promoted by the White House and both party leaderships in the Senate - but opposed by most Republican congressmen and a large majority of voters.
Something was needed to break the log-jam of opposition.
And last Wednesday federal agents "swooped" on plants in 26 states belonging to IFCO, a U.S. subsidiary of a Dutch firm supplying wood pallets and plastic containers to industry, and arrested 1,187 illegal immigrant workers. Seven former and current IFCO managers were also charged with employing illegal aliens.
[snip]
I recently suggested - wrongly - that there had been little or no enforcement of employer sanctions since the passage of the 1986 amnesty law; that, once an illegal reached a major city such as Los Angeles, Phoenix or Chicago, he was safe from official interest and could work unmolested. That was not quite accurate. The Clinton administration in fact managed some (albeit patchy) "internal" enforcement of employer sanctions. For instance, the period 1995-1997 saw 10,000 to 18,000 worksite arrests of illegals a year. Some 1,000 employers were served notices of fines for employing them.
Under the Bush administration, however, worksite arrests fell to 159 in 2004 - with the princely total of three notices of intent to fine served on employers. Thus, worksite arrests under President Bush have fallen from Clintonian levels by something like 97 per cent - even though 9/11 occurred in the meantime.

These "arrests" are just political subterfuge and pandering to the base -- and will have NO far-reaching effect. It is all about presidential poll numbers. It is a sham.

Apparently cheap labor to keep corporate profits high is more important than homeland security.
They were bused to the Mexican border and released, but they were also back at the mill before the bus got back!
The ol' gubm'nt sure had some teeth in those days! LOL
In 2004, there were a total of four (4) prosecutions of American employers using illegal alien employees.
The "raids" were just window-dressing.
With hopes of getting the "vigilantes" to return to the Republican fold,
donate to the RNC, and vote Republican.
I don't think it worked. lol
The whole argument about illegal aliens helping keep costs low falls flat on it's face when compared to our governments reaction to Americans buying cheap medicine in Canada.
Didnt we give illegal aliens amnesty back in the 70's?? or was it 80's?
Didnt work, did it?
What do you expect from Dilberto Gonzales??
Now the Republicans are spinning just like the Democrats, whom we all thought were so dishonest.
Now, why did they want my vote again?
Illegals marching across the country...
I wonder if "doing the jobs that Americans don't want" includes voting in Marxist candidates, if they gain citizenship?
I saw Michelle Malkin on Fox this morning. She said of the 1200+ or so that got arrested about 200+ accepted summary expedited deportation and they remainder were issued "notices to appear" and were released.
The whole exercise was just a giant Chinese fire drill that resulted in more catch and release.
Didnt work, did it?
It sure did work. The number of illegals dropped to zero. It was a tremendous success for INS. It was a tremendous success for the Dems, unions and socialists.
We need to do it again ASAP. Our immigration problems will drop to numbers that we can handle quietly, without any public ranting about what the gummint should be doing.

Depends on definition. There was an amnesty in 1984/85, but they continue coming. The next amnesty will "work" too.
You nailed it. They turned almost all of them lose as soon as the press was gone. Of course they told them all to come back at a future date to be deported.
One high profile raid with managers arrested is all I ask.
