Why not lower the tax???? From the article,
"Democrats, meanwhile, were assembling their own package of measures, including a proposal offered by Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J., for a 60-day suspension of the 18.4 cent federal gasoline tax and the 24-cent a gallon diesel tax. He said it would provide immediate relief of $100 million a day for motorists."

Okay, let's look at the math:
A Consumer drives 15,000 miles per year. He drives a car that gets around 20 mpg, so he is using around 2 gallons of gas a day. An 18.4c reduction in tax, for 60 days, would save him around $22 in direct cost.
I'm of the opinion that this "short-term" reduction in tax would, if anything, only prevent prices on items from increasing and you would see no decrease at all.
