Everyone will get a hit piece (although I'm tapping my foot still waiting for one on McCain) - this is pretty minor though - if this is all the MSM has on Allen - he will breeze right thru this. This is nothing!

...that he created his whole persona it's not genuine...

Says who? Ryan Lizza? Do not take so much stock in the opinion of this writer.

This article is a clear example to me that they see George Allen as the man to beat. Time to begin the ever so subtle lying smear campaign and try to convince the public that whatever good impressions they may have about Allen, he isn't genuine.

After all, they'll have to go back to his high school days to do it.

I think the problem with Allen is that he created his whole persona it's not genuine.

Nope, it's completely genuine. I've known him for over 20 years.

What you see is exactly what you get. It's no act. Take that to the bank.

As I indicated, Allen will be in for a fairly tough race against Jim Webb, a legitimate Vietnam war hero (unlike Kerry) and former Secretary of the Navy under Reagan. Webb is a Naval Academy graduate and relatively conservative compared to most Democrats. He favors disengagement from Iraq.

Allen, as the incumbent and former governor, has the edge, but it won't be a walk in the park. He could be bloodied even if he wins. A lot will depend on turnout. Allen is raising lots of money, including some contributions from me.

Allen's problem is his style. He's FM easy-listening compared to Rudy's loud hard-rock and McCain's serious NPR. Allen is so mellow he's almost boring.

Can he fire up the conservative base? That remains to be seen.

But he should chill out with the redneck stuff - its a turn off to alot of folks and only creates controversy when there is none.

Perhaps in New York. But here in Virginia, it seems to be working just fine for him.

Did you read the article about his childhood? That is where I based it on.

What article? You mean the one you just posted? I don't believe everything I read. Sometimes, the author has an agenda. Make that most of the time.

"But he should chill out with the Redneck stuff" . . .

Excuse me, I'm a proud redneck myself, and I grew up in CA, moved to VA. There was a lot of redneck persona in CA in the '60's.

The point is, it's not fair to judge people's past attitudes by today's standards. Since the Civil Rights movement most of the country has done a 180 on racial attitudes, including George Allen.

And I'm the only girl in a family with four boys. They could be mean, but let anybody else threaten me and they were on 'em like a chicken on a bug. ;)

A lot will depend on turnout.

Check out the "Gone Shadding with George Allen" thread in the GOP forum. The contrast that reception with the fact that Jim Webb had about 50 supporters at his announcment in Richmond.

You're right, it'll be a race. But Allen will prevail.

Trust me, there's no better campaigner than George Allen. I have seen him electrify an audience.

Look for the picture of him wearing a Confederate flag pin in his high school yearbook to be widely distributed in the urban areas of Virginia.

I found this whole article to be rather silly. If the Democrats really want to tar-and-feather Allen as a Confederate sympathizer, and make that into a campaign issue, they don't need to go digging through school yearbooks. They could just reference the Confederate Heritage Month he enacted while Governor. It's not like it's a secret or some grand revelation or something.

Thanks. I will check out the link. I think Allen will prevail as well but I want him to win big so he is in good shape for 2008. A narrow victory in Virginia, a state that has gone Rep in every Presidential election since 1952 except for 1964, would not be helpful. The Dems will be pumping lots of money in here to defeat Allen.

You haven't heard of fish cooked on a plank, so you make a silly joke about it? It's a very good outdoor cooking method, done with salmon, as well. Maybe you haven't even heard of shad!

Agree, but this election is not just about Virginia in 2006, but also, about 2008 nationally. The demographics of Virginia are also changing with the very liberal and growing Northern Virginia region pitted against the rest of the mostly rural and more conservative part of the state. Fairfax County went for Kerry in 2004 and the election of Kaine was primarily due to the vote in Northern Virginia. It didn't help that the GOP selected a lousy candidate.

True I'm sure he's fine in Virginia and I am positive he will win his Senate Seat. But we are talking about 2008 and Virginia is not the only state that Allen has to impress.

Only if they really believe he's vulnerable. Right now they still have to make it through a primary fight.
