Canada Borders - Border Crossing Problems Lead Guards to Walk from their Posts

BLAINE WA - A robbery in Bellingham (sic:WA) led to some problems at the U.S.-Canadian border Saturday night after Canadian crossing guards walked off the job.

Guards at three crossings left their posts after word an armed robbery suspect was headed that way from Bellingham.

The guards are not armed, and are allowed to leave if they feel they are in danger.

Traffic at the border was backed up for a few hours Saturday night, but no other problems were reported and operations were back to normal Sunday morning.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. Unarmed border agents walked off the job three times in just a few weeks earlier this year -- each time after a report of armed criminals headed that direction.

Canada's new prime minister Stephen Harper has proposed changing the law to allow agents to finally carry guns.

The Conservatives have been in power in Ottawa for only a short time, and while that isn't an excuse it does take time to overcome damn near 13 years of LIEberal corruption, indifference and malfeasance, and that extends all the way through the federal government bureaucracy.

Look at our own State Department, on some days it wouldn't be unreasonable to think that it was staffed by clerks and middle managers trained by al Qaeda itself.

Canada has changed course, but any ship of state doesn't turn on a dime. Let's cut them some slack, and maybe loan their border guards some extra M16s, how about it?

They don't trust their border guards with guns? OMG. If they are that untrustworthy, then why did they give them such an important job?

This is about the 5th fleeing of the border guards in the last few months. The baddies are learning it is a "safe" way to cross. It is escalating, IMO.

The union is all for guns and have been begging for the ability to protect their post.

The Tories come from Alberta where things get done. I would think with the escalation of these events, at least the Grits would put the national defence forces at the border until the regulars can get trained.
