It's clear that the sadness and embarrassment aren't just from Jamiel's "being gay," but from the fact that Jamiel sold an interview to Out Magazine which included pictues of the Terry family. Randall experienced this as a betrayal of trust and an invasion of privacy, carried out by Jamiel because Out Magazine paid him a significant amount of money.
Terry's response is more understandable, and more normal. That is, if your child becomes a vocal, in-everyone's-face, promote-immorality activist.
