"Make prudent use of a box in which an ironing board was sold If you find it necessary to introduce a shotgun or rifle or two into your abode... 8~)"

I live in a rural area and all my neighbors are gun 'nuts.' No problem here, I'm well armed as is the whole community.

I think the little old lady across the street is on-to-me though.

hahahahahaha

Every time we come through the door of one of our local pawn shops, the employees trip over themselves trying to be the first to get to us. They know a sale is about to go down. The people who work at Wal Marts in their gun department, knows us by our first name. lol And a couple of other stores around town too. ;-)

Might aught to be careful about that little old lady.......

I have birds breaking out all over the yard.

On my covered patio there is a fan with a bowl light fixture and there are three baby birds hatched and growing there as well.

This could be an epidemic!!!

" I'm sitting here laughing at my monitor..."

That's OK -- as long as your monitor isn't laughing back at you as a consequence of the Patriot Act.... 8~)

"On a brighter note, gas prices will most likely come down (sarcasm)"

I actually heard a 'petroleum analyst' say on Fox News today that the Bird Flu would cause gasoline prices to crater.

Our local Taco Bell has those kinds of plants. Their edges are a sharp as needles. I have rose bushes but I don't think their thorns will intimated anyone. Time to upgrade to the type you mentioned I guess.

It isn't that I think the threat is not real, it's just that I can't get into a tizzy about it.

I'm thinking like a Boy Scout on this. Be Prepared.

If we panic, we will not think clearly.

"Calm down folks. Stiff upper lip now, what? Show some moral fibre."

I tell people that whatever triggers their interest in self-sufficiency, whether it is bird flu, earthquakes, hurricanes, Y2K, terrorism, or unemployment, to run with that feeling.

Once people have made the initial preparations, relax, knowing that you have a safety net.

Whenever a new reminder comes along, maybe a Katrina or a huge terrorist arrest, use that reminder to motivate you to look at your stores with an eye to updating or refreshing them.

I just like the idea of Americans becoming more interested in their own independence, and creating a feeling of strength within the home and family.

What you really need is the 3M N-95 mask as a backup.

Thanks, added to my list.

Such is not my original idea. Embassies and other high-security "targets" around the world have deployed such plants for decades. Beuatiful, "natural," but ever so functional (check out hydrangeas).....

You're not alone.

Good. My favorite sister has begun to call me 'your crazy Great Aunt Pat' in jest, when talking to her Grandchildren about me.

"If I stockpiled many pounds of flour and sugar and cornmeal, etc., I'm not sure what I would do with them or cook with them."

Fifty pound sacks can be bought at Sam's suprisingly cheap. I'm single guy and live alone, I usually eat out. I have 100 pounds of each in case a cook shows up, lol. Or, they could be used as barter. Cigarettes will be an excellent barter item too. Condiments, everyone will forget condiments.

About water, bottled is fine. I have my own water well, generator and gasoline. I'm in 'hurricane alley' and am also prepared for a direct hit from a cat-5 hurricane, most of my Bird Flu preparations are just add-ons to an already deeply supplied situation.

>>>"STOP the illegal aliens from flooding in NOW!!! They already spread TB and brought in disease! "

That would be called "Spreading the TB that Americans can't spread."

The source of Avian flu will probably be an infected person who boarded a flight from the Far East (Vietnam where they nearly sleep with their chickens, China, Thailand, Phillipines, Indonesia, etc.) and deplaned in a high population area like San Francisco or Los Angeles. From there it would multiply, if it can jump from human to human.

TB may come across the border, but there's much less probability with Avian flu. Perhaps the only way Avian flu could come across the Mexican border would be on the backs of an OTM (Other Than Mexican person from the Far East) coughing and running across the Rio during Border Patrol shifts, right behind the Iranians with their fake Spanish accents and wide brimmed hats.

Even if we were not affected, an Avian flu epidemic in the Far East could really hurt mainland China's business (no one wants their exports) and that would really affect the big US box stores like Wal-Mart.

As far as I know, there is no confirmed virus variant that transmits from human to human. There have been cases where people in the same family were infected, but that could have been through the same virus being breathed or eaten. Thus, the most important thing to remember is: never make your waiter mad when ordering Sweet and Sour Chicken -- you may get something extra.

Was there this kind of hysteria before Y2K on this board? The flu kills 1000s every year worldwide. Why is this one
so scary?

I'll admit, We did prepare for Y2K more than usual but, my Wife and I are naturally conservative and do keep food and water stocked for any eventuality.
