$1.5 million in art disappears along with delivery driver after Boca exhibit
South Florida Sun-Sentinel ^ | May 3 2006 | By Leon Fooksman, Ivette M. Yee & Missy Stoddard (It took 3 because they couldn't stop laughing...)

About 35,000 art enthusiasts packed the Boca Raton Museum of Art this spring to view exhibits that included the paintings of Milton Avery, a modernist often called the "American Matisse."

Now, seven of those paintings have vanished and so has the ex-con with a suspended driver's license who was entrusted to drive them to the Avery estate in New York.

Authorities are looking for Patrick McIntosh, 36, a 6-foot, 9-inch art-transport driver who disappeared April 18 with a rented Budget truck after he loaded Avery's works along with furniture, sculptures, photos and other art from at least 14 other collectors in South Florida. He was to take the shipment that day from his employer, David Jones Fine Art Services in Boca Raton, pick up more art in the Naples area and deliver it all in the New York City area.

McIntosh never made it to Naples.

The day he went missing, David Jones' company credit cards were used to withdraw $200 in Fort Pierce, investigators said. Another $600 was taken out in Gainesville the next day.

Since then, McIntosh's trail has gone cold.

His former girlfriend, Dawn Divine, 32, noticed he took his few possessions from her home west of West Palm Beach right before he was supposed to make the trip.

"He gave me and the kids a kiss and said he'd see us in seven to 10 days. He said he'd call in an hour to bring me some money," she said. "I never heard from him again."

....

He seemed, at first, the perfect catch when she met him at her job as a bartender in March. "But he stole me and my kids' heart and you can't put a price on this."

Autumn, Red Rock Falls, and a nude by Avery

I love his work: he has a great sense of color, form, and texture. It's almost poetic.

Sorry to hear about the theft. His work will be very identifiable. Hope it doesn't get destroyed so that there is "no evidence" to convict the thief (as seems to have happened with Munch's famous Scream).

Never saw his works before. Thanks for posting some; I like them!

He must have already had a market for the art, don't you think?

Yes, Avery is a fairly well-known artist. His work was an inspiration for Rothko (although, at the time, Avery was not well-respected by the "in" cliques, and when Rothko said that he liked Avery's work, the cliques did not understand at all and were rather shocked by Rothko's statement).

Silly people; they need to learn to look, and not follow the pack.

He will get caught. Unless he already had a client lined up. Check the insurance company I guess...

And if his face makes AMW, then should not be too long before he is captured.

Another low-mentality single mom with kids making bad choices. No doubt she was desperately looking for some guy to live with to solve her financial problems and sex drive.

She's just lucky he didn't shoot her and rape the kids.

I wonder if he invited her up to his trailer to see his etchings when they met.
