Caribbean-based mobile operator Digicel is expanding again -- this time the Denis O'Brien-owned firm has rolled out operations in Haiti, with an investment of over US$130 million. The investment is reportedly the largest corporate investment ever made in troubled Haiti by an international company. The launch of Digicel Haiti follows the completion of Digicel's purchase of Bouygues Telecom Caraibe on Tuesday. The firm currently has operations in 20 Caribbean countries and has invested USD1 billion in the region since its launch in 2001. Digicel expects its current staff of more than 1,500 to increase 33 percent by 2007.
Probably very smart. In all likelihood the cell service is secondary to the infrastructure they'll be installing and leasing to the Haitian government and private companies.
In a few years, sell everything off to one of the major telephone companies, and move on.
If it wasn't for the rampant corruption in the third world, there'd be billions of dollars flowing in private investments to those countries. The high level of return possible in such countries for relatively small investments is staggering. But the cost of doing business with corrupt governments usually reduces or eliminates the profit in the service of the greater good.../sarc
Populism, corruption, and liberalism enforce world poverty because if the problems were solved, they'd have no reason to exist.
They have phones in Haiti???
Used only when the tom-tom drummers are tired.
Haitian 1: My tom-tom drummer is out of credit, can I borrow yours?
Haitian 2: My tom-tom drummer needs charging, sorry.
