The White House on Thursday disputed an account of President George W. Bush singing the U.S. national anthem in Spanish during the 2000 presidential campaign, saying his Spanish is not that good.
Critics have accused Bush of hypocrisy for opposing a Spanish language version of the anthem.
They pointed to a book called "American Dynasty" by Kevin Phillips, who wrote that Bush "would drop in at Hispanic festivals and parties, sometimes joining in singing 'The Star-Spangled Banner' in Spanish."
White House spokesman Scott McClellan said the assertion did not ring true to him because, "The president speaks Spanish, but not that well."
"I'm saying that not only was that suggestion absurd, but that he couldn't possibly sing the national anthem in Spanish. He's not that good with his Spanish," McClellan said.

The recent recording (A) changed lyrics and intent, and (B) changed the title to OUR Anthem.

Scott, what the hell are you doing still hanging around the White House press room? What a pathetic attempt to defend the President by giving Rooters still another propaganda point.

I wouldn't believe a thing Kevin Phillips had to say. He's one frustrated cynical liberal dude trying to pass himself off as a Republican.

why is the communication division stating there is no objection to it being sung in spanish as long as it the same words not some hateful, altered america bashing lyrics.I for one love to hear it being sung by some senior citizens in their native tongue who may not have mastered the english language but are proud to be called citizens or permanent residents

You beat me to it. :)
If President Bush was singing the Anthem in Spanish, we would be asking why the Mexicans all went back to Mexico all of a sudden. :)

Yesterday I wrote with respect to the claim that President Bush sang the national anthem in Spanish:
Most Mexicans don't know the title of the US national anthem in Spanish, much less the words in Spanish. President Bush must know better Spanish than most Mexicans I'm filing this story in the category of President Bush sang "God Save the Queen" in Sanskrikt when he went to Britain.

I bet John Kerry or Michael Dukakis would.

LOL! Ya and no one else wanted the job that he offered Meirs either, and now we are told that illegals are great because they do the job no one else will do. This excuse is getting old.

I've actually enjoyed hearing the Anthem sung in different languages...by new Citizens that are proud to have the opportunity to become Citizens. But changing the words around...no thanks.

Because people are stupid... if the WH comes out trying to explain the difference, and the intent of this song (read the plans for the 'remix' and those additional lyrics) it would get played in the MSM in a way aimed to chip away at more Republican support for Bush... and the plurality of people that aren't "intentionally" paying attention and just get the "incidental" exposure to news (promo for local news, headline glanced at, joke on lettermen, etc)
