Madam, I make no accusations about the depth or sincerety of Mr. Bush's faith, and I am sorry that you assumed that I had. It is simply my observation that when the President appears to be in trouble with his "base" (and that would include not just religious conservatives, but Republicans and conservatives of all stripes), his press people tend to flood the media with stories about prayer breakfasts, interfaith services and religious messages.

I certainly believe in the power of prayer, but I also believe that sometimes on this earth we must (as John Kennedy's speechwriter once wrote) truly make God's work our own. Or to put it somewhat indelicately, less praying, and more action!
