I've been looking at the MP3 downloads at Garageband.com lately, most genres except the two just mentioned, and I could not believe how much sick, ugly, vulgar stuff there was there. (Some gems too, yes.)
Yes, Europe is a whole lot more immoral than the US. Prostitution is legal, they fully accept gays , and etc.
The difference that it might make is that some would no longer see our culture as a virulent threat, but instead as a competitor to their "true faith." Those who believe the infidel must die would not care about any change, of course.
Well, I resent them too. We know what damage pornography does to those who consume it, and it leads to crimes against women and children.
Considering the way devout Muslims who reject any Western influence treat women, I'm having a hard time finding this a particularly convincing line of argument.
That's why I think Chuck is only somewhat right on this one. Sure, Osama's carried out some attacks in Europe, but I think part of the motivation there was that he couldn't hit us again. We are the top dog, so we are target number one. That would not change if we were more moral, or even if we stopped exporting cultural garbage. I don't think even a total exit from the Middle East would satisfy Osama, I'm certain he believes he's a major figure in the history of uniting humanity under the banner of Islam.

Islam is a matter of appearances (and only then inside Dar al-Islam)...whereas Christianity (real Christianity) is about a complete change of heart.
Christianity is about purging oneself of sin and islam is about the mechanical adherence to rules (and those rules are incredibly circuitous...but finally permitting the most unimaginable sexual perversion).
Islam is seductive because it offers a false path to righteousness. Islam says you can have your cake and eat it too.
Kind of trick to get the west to shoulder blame and/or find mutual disdain for certain elements in popular culture and modern society.
One of the founders of radical islam in the 20th century --a guy named Sayyid Qutb -- was aghast at the decadence and sexuality he witnessed at a (gasp!) midwestern church social in the 1930s.
But it's not just Hollywood, USA. The first nudy show I ever saw was on regular tv in Denmark 35 years ago.
That is certainly the image they want to project. The private reality is far different.
There is, as you imply, certainly an undercurrent of depravity in muslim culture, which is tolerated there as a part of traditional culture.
And you are right. What they hate in us is not our supposed immorality, but rather it is the very thing they also envy, which is our freedom to make those decisions for ourselves.
By comparison, westerners are guiltless, they feel free to make mistakes, and free to resolve their situation "face to face" with their Maker. There is, in western countries and especially in the US much less need for public hypocrisy. In the West, people are good because they want to be, not because anyone stands over them with an axe. They make their mistakes right out in the open. And they base their relationship with the Father on love, rather than fear. How many muslims can relate to that?

The essential dynamic of their religion (their relationship with God, that is) is different. You are absolutely right, and I think this is something that few Christians understand.
Yes, that's the way it starts -- beer in the batter. The gateway use of alcohol. Pretty soon you've got entire neighborhoods of housewives staggering drunkenly in the streets, dancing in the breakfast nooks, partying like Studio 54 in its hayday.

If they don't like our slutty actresses and Internet porn and so on, power to them. That's their business. I don't much like it either.
But if they want to use it as a recruiting tool to convince people to kill us, and are successful in doing so, then those damned people were going to find some rationale for killing us even without slutty actresses and porn.
If I find myself in a position to defend slutty actresses or porn, I am not going to like it. But I will have no problem signing up to drop high explosives on people who want to kill us because they have issues with sluts and porn, because if not sluts or porn, it might be our poetry, music, architecture of just our stupid caucasian faces that put them over the edge.
If it comes to that, we have to recognize that is clearly an US or THEM situation.

Well, let’s see. In the news this week, we have stories of Duke University lacrosse players accused of getting drunk and raping an exotic dancer.
Yeah, well I link the middle-east with mooslims, and link mooslims with beheading christians, desecrating the bodies of Americans they have murdered, roadside bombs, suicide bombings, 'honor' killings, and burkas.
Decadence sounds pretty good compared with what the mooslims do. Not to mention what decadence the mooslims take part in when "Allah is not looking."
