Shuler to oppose GOP incumbent Taylor in election
Associated Press
Former University of Tennessee and NFL quarterback Heath Shuler won a congressional Democratic primary Tuesday in North Carolina.
Shuler notched 77 percent to beat Michael Morgan, with 62 percent of votes tallied. He'll face Republican incumbent Charles Taylor, representing the 11th District, who handled opponent John Armor by taking 81 percent of the votes tallied.
Shuler is expected to give Taylor, a veteran representative criticized for his ties to disgraced lobbyist Jack Abramoff, a strong run on the general ballot.
Taylor, however, has survived a number of Democratic challenges during his 16-year tenure.
"This is the year," Shuler said Tuesday night. "We continue to see the trend that he has in his votes. He doesn't reflect our family values, the people in our district or the direction our country should be going."

rather his NFL career.
I think his NFL career was more successful...
Hmmm...Isn't a Vole a basically a small underground Rat
I'm glad they didn't refer to Shuler as an ex-Washington Redskins quarterback, which would have caused me to spit at my monitor until I died of dehydration.
I'm sure his campaign folks would rather the media ignore that part of his life.
Box of rocks would have been a better draft pick. Thanks, Bobby
I didn't know Shuler had made it to the NFL. Weird. Must have been a programming thing in my area. I never saw him play.
A vole is but a VOL is a fiercely patriotic Southern person that would never think of voting for a 'Rat.
He was in the NFL for almost a whole summer.
If you blinked you missed his career.
That was also the same draft in which Colts GM Bill Tobin ripped Mel Kiper Jr.
Looks like Congressman Billybob lost also.
Could you 'splain this Kiper bit? As far as Heath does anyone know him in NC?
Basically Kiper trashed the Colts for not drafting QB Trent Dilfer. Tobin was interviewed a short time afterwards and asked "Who the hell is Mel Kiper?".
Even if he has done nothing wrong, I guess this phrase will be Taylor's MSM tagline from now on.
I wonder how Congressman Jefferson from LA will be described now that a second big has pleaded guilty to bribing him for about a half million dollars....and that's what he pleaded to, not usually the full amount that actually occurred. This was in the paper today, but I never heard it once on the radio news.
Interestingly, Shular is a pro-life democrat. You rarely hear of those. I wonder if the d party will let him continue to make that claim.
Correction, Shuler.
He was duped by people smarter than him... He was a simple man overwhelmed by the unfamiliar territory of DC.
