everyone started buying small amounts, when the suply truck shows up he won't be dropping off as much gas.

Uh so if I buy 4 gallons a day instead of 20 gallons once every 5 days, how is it that the supply truck goes home any less full? You've not changed aggregate demand, simply smoothed out the peaks and valleys.

There is a rolling inventory that is not being put to good use. We are inveted in our gas tanks and not earning interest on our investments.

Correct. In fact you have most likely increased demand since you burn some amount of gas just driving into the station
