When Barry Munitz quit as chancellor of the huge California State University system in 1998, he walked away with a separation agreement promising him a generous one-year paid sabbatical and other benefits should he ever return.

Now, eight years later, he's back -- and the terms of his departure deal, including a $163,776 one-year salary, are under attack by CSU faculty and at least one angry state lawmaker....

Under the terms of his CSU separation agreement, Munitz is entitled to become a "trustee professor" with a one-year salary of $163,776 -- significantly more than the $112,548 earned by CSU's highest-paid full professors. In his second year, his salary drops to that of other top professors. The agreement says he can collect the money while on sabbatical...

I know I don't make anything like that kind of a salary: for one course, with a sabbatical right away instead of 7 years down the line? No wonder they are making a fuss.

I know I don't make anything like that kind of a salary:

What's worse is the ones working 20 hours per week for that kind of money. Work 40-50 hours per week like the rest of us and college tuition could plummet because you'd only need half the staff...

Unfortunately, a deal is a deal, and it is good to honor your deal.

But why in God's name is the state making such ludicrous deals in the first place? It's insane, and it's a serious abuse of taxpayer money.

Yes it is a serious abuse of taxpayer funds, but there have been so many of these higher education that I have come to the conclusion that those doing this really believe they deserve the $$$$$'s.

My own experiences suggest that the professors and administrators at this level really do regard themselves as a different race.
